Reigning European cruiserweight titleholder Leonardo Mosquea and mandatory challenger Mateusz Masternak have been unable to reach a deal.
The EBU therefore scheduled a purse bid on Monday July 21. However, if both parties come to an agreement in the meantime the purse bid will be cancelled.
Mosquea claimed
the vacant EBU title when he upset
Cheavon Clarke last December. Masternak held the same title in 2012.
Mosquea (17-0, 10 KOs), rated at No. 8 by The Ring at cruiserweight, was born in the Dominican Republic before basing himself out of France, where he made his professional debut in 2019.
He won the French title in 2023 before moving onto the European scene last year. The 31-year-old Mosquea has beaten Dylan Bregeon by unanimous decision, Clarke by split decision and, most recently, Ivan Garcia by ninth-round technical knockout.
Masternak (49-6, 32 KOs) has been a professional since 2006. The Polish fighter won his first 30 fights and claimed the aforementioned European title, but lost it against future WBC titlist Grigory Drozd, who stopped Masternak in the 11th round. He subsequently came unstuck against Youri Kalenga, who beat him by split decision, and another future WBC cruiserweight titleholder, Tony Bellew, who won a unanimous decision against him.
However, the veteran does have a win over former unified cruiserweight kingpin Jean-Marc Mormeck, a 10-round split decision, and he stopped Kalenga in the sixth round of their rematch. He lost a close unanimous decision to former two-time 200-pound titlist Yuniel Dorticos in the opening round of The World Boxing Super Series.
The 38-year-old contender rebounded with six wins to earn a shot at then WBO titlist
Chris Billam-Smith. Though he was ahead after seven rounds on two of the scorecards, he was stopped with a broken rib in eight-rounds. He has returned with a pair of wins, including a unanimous points victory over Floyd Masson.
