Look to your left. Now look to your right. Women and children excluded,
Vergil Ortiz Jr. is willing to fight any and everyone.
Yet, even with all the talent and ability in the world, Ortiz has yet to win an official title. During his run at 147 pounds, the 27-year-old didn’t stick around long enough to compete for one. Now he’s feeling incredibly comfortable at 154. His trophy case, however, remains empty.
That can all change in the coming months. Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) is highly ranked in all four sanctioning bodies and figures to get a title shot sooner rather than later. But while those shiny belts are the only thing on his mind,
Xander Zayas can’t keep Ortiz off his.
The Puerto Rican contender has continually called out Ortiz. For the most part, the hard-hitting star has ignored him. It has nothing to do with Zayas as a fighter, but more so with priorities. Ortiz wants to get his hands on a world title, nothing less. So, if Zayas (21-0, 13 KOs) wants to grab his attention, he knows exactly what to do.
“If he has a title, obviously he's gonna be on my radar,” Ortiz told
The Ring.Zayas got the message. Although he kept pushing for a fight against Ortiz, he turned his attention towards Sebastian Fundora, the former unified and current WBC champion.
Zayas was close to getting him in the ring, but Fundora
was stripped of his WBO crown to rematch Tim Tszyu. It wasn’t the news Zayas wanted to hear, but the sanctioning body placated him by allowing the 22-year-old to fight for its vacant title.
Nothing has been finalized, but
a deal is reportedly in place for Zayas to take on Charles Conwell's recent conqueror, Jorge Garcia Perez.
Just like that, Zayas went from forgettable and inconspicuous to the center of Ortiz’s attention.
"That's not the only way, but he's obviously fighting for a world title so if he gets it, he jumps the list."
