Xander Zayas and Jorge Garcia Perez have reached a deal to move forward with a fight for the WBO junior middleweight title.
"The WBO confirms that Top Rank, Golden Boy, and Zanfer Promotions have reached an agreement for the subject matter bout. Official fight date and venue to be announced," WBO president Gustavo Olivieri said on social media.
Multiple sources informed of the deal
told The Ring that the fight could take place in July in New York. Zayas is represented by Top Rank and Perez is promoted by Golden Boy and Zanfer.
The last three fights for the Puerto Rican Zayas (21-0, 13 KOs) have taken place at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York, including his ninth-round TKO win against Slawa Spomer in February.
Perez (33-4, 26 KOs), a 28-year-old from Mexico, is coming off a career-best split decision win against Charles Conwell in April in Oceanside, California.
Zayas, 22, and Perez will be squaring off for the WBO title previously held by Sebastian Fundora. “The Towering Inferno” was recently stripped of the belt as he opted to move forward with his planned rematch against
Tim Tszyu on July 19.
The WBO had previously ordered a fight between Fundora and Zayas after Fundora’s March 22 stoppage win against Chordale Booker, and then a purse bid hearing once a deal couldn't be reached before stripping him.
Once Fundora was out of the WBO picture, Perez was awarded the opportunity as the next highest rated contender.
Fundora also possesses the WBC 154-pound title, which he won when he beat Tszyu in a split decision in March 2024.
Zayas is the WBO's No. 1-ranked contender, Perez is rated No. 2.
The Ring has Perez ranked No. 9 and Zayas rated No. 10 at 154 pounds.
Other champions in the division include Terence Crawford (WBA) and Bakhram Murtazaliev (IBF). The Ring title is vacant.
