The IBF won’t allow its junior welterweight title to remain vacant much longer.
The New Jersey-based sanctioning body has once again ordered representatives for Lindolfo Delgado, its No. 1 contender, and Arthur Biyarslanov, its No. 3 contender, to complete a deal for their 140-pound title fight. The No. 2 spot is vacant.
This is familiar territory for both men.
The two sides were ordered May 27 to negotiate terms for a fight. They eventually reached an agreement and were scheduled to square off on the Canelo Alvarez-Christian Mbilli undercard this past Saturday night at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Delgado (24-0, 16 KOs) informed the IBF the previous week that he would not be travel to Riyadh due to safety concerns related to attacks on Saudi Arabia’s capital city. The IBF reviewed the situation after their bout was removed from the card and ordered another round of negotiations.
If a deal is not struck by November 23, a purse bid will be scheduled.
Delgado, a 2016 Olympian from Linares, Mexico, initially hoped to rip the title away from Richardson Hitchins. However, his fellow Olympian opted to move up in weight and dropped his title to campaign in the welterweight division.
In three of his last four fights, the 31-year-old Delgado nearly suffered defeat. He eked out a split-decision win over Bryan Flores, a majority decision against Elvis Rodriguez and another split-decision victory versus Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela.
The Quebec-based Biyarslanov (21-0, 17 KOs), on the other hand, has been a wrecking machine.
The 31-year-old southpaw from Makhachkala, Russia, has stopped three of his last four opponents. In his last appearance, The Ring’s No. 10-ranked junior welterweight made it look easy against Jimerr Espinosa, stopping him in the seventh round April 9 in Montreal.
