Subriel Matias feels vindicated after it became clear that the level of the banned substance Ostarine in his system was below the allowable.
Subriel Matias believes that his faith in the man above will work in his favor.
The Ring’s No. 2 ranked junior welterweight turned in an adverse analytical finding for Ostarine, stemming from his November 9 VADA drug test distributed by the New York State Athletic Commission.
The amount found in his system, however, was below the allowed level of 0.1 nanograms per milliliter. Matias’ levels came in at 0.085.
Upon hearing the news, Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) took to social media to proclaim his innocence.
“The day I try to cheat, I become nothing in my life,” Matias said on his Instagram account. “God is faithful, blessings.”
Matias feels vindicated, but he isn’t necessarily out of the woods just yet.
The current WBC 140-pound belt holder is scheduled to return to the ring on January 10 in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center against Dalton Smith. Those plans, of course, were in jeopardy. But, according to the commission, his upcoming fight and championship status could remain intact.
"Matias has been cooperative with the Commission thus far regarding this matter, and is subject to additional testing and review,” The Commission wrote previously. “The New York State Athletic Commission is aware that Mr. Matías, who is currently licensed, has received an adverse analytical finding from VADA concerning an out of competition test. The reported concentration was below the applicable threshold used by multiple jurisdictions, including Nevada, California, and New York.
“In accordance with Commission regulations, all licensees must comply with any medical examinations and laboratory testing required by the Commission, and the results of out of competition testing administered by VADA are appropriately considered when determining fitness to compete in New York State.
“The Commission is closely monitoring the situation, will review the results of all additional ongoing testing, and is in communication with relevant parties regarding the VADA report. As the matter is under review, no further comment will be made by the Commission at this time.”
Should Matias be found guilty, he could suffer the same fate as Ryan Garcia. The popular welterweight contender tested positive for Ostarine following his April of 2024 win over Devin Haney in New York. That very commission overturned his victory to a no-contest and suspended Garcia for one year.
