LOS ANGELES – Jose Ramirez isn’t surprised that he’s being cast aside heading into his May 2 matchup against Devin Haney as part of the Ring Magazine card in Times Square, New York on DAZN PPV.
LOS ANGELES – Jose Ramirez isn’t surprised that he’s being cast aside heading into his May 2 matchup against Devin Haney as part of the Ring Magazine card in Times Square, New York on DAZN PPV.
The former unified junior welterweight champion Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) looked like a shell of himself last time out, dropping a 10-round unanimous decision against Arnold Barboza Jr.
And now, the 32-year-old Fresno native is perceived to be a stepping stone as Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) looks to rebuild his career following a controversial clash against Ryan Garcia last year.
“I'm expecting the best version of Devin Haney and a fighter who still has a lot to prove, the same reason that I want to prove that I am still a badass,” Ramirez told The Ring in an interview. “I respect him and his father but my job is to test his chin. I know what's at stake and I have a job to do, and that's to win.
“Respectfully, it's understandable that [I have been written off]. I haven't shown the Ramirez that I have been. I feel like I have been Mr. Nice Guy, saying yes to everyone and never standing up for myself. I'm a quiet guy, and people pay attention to those who are loud and dramatic. I'm a simple, uplifting family man of four children. I consider myself a successful person in my home and my environment. I've always been happy with that.”
Since turning pro in 2012, the United States Olympian Ramirez has fought as a 140-pounder. The bout against Haney is supposed to take place at a catchweight of 144 pounds, a welcome development for Ramirez.
“What has me excited the most is moving up,” said Ramirez. “I have been pushing my body past its limits to make 140. But I am a true professional and have no excuses. I can't wait to show a bigger, stronger, and faster version of Jose Ramirez.
“Everyone has good and bad performances. Boxing should be about the best facing the best. My last performance wasn’t the best, but here I am again being a part of a big fight on an amazing card. That’s how boxing should be. It’s my job to go out there on May 2 and win.”
