Zhilei Zhang has dared Agit Kabayel to employ his patented body attack when the two meet on this weekend’s mammoth ‘The Last Crescendo’ card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Arslanbek Makhmudov and Frank Sanchez were unbeaten when they stepped into the ring with Kabayel but were both chopped down and stopped as the savvy German committed to a sustained assault downstairs.
Zhang, 27-2-1 (22 KOs), presents a bigger but much more dangerous target for Kabayel and he hasn’t spent any time worrying about the 32 year-old concentrating on his midsection during their WBC interim heavyweight title fight.
DAZN will broadcast the entire, stacked event worldwide.
“I'm not worried about that. It won't work on me,” Zhang told Queensberry after a brief shake-out at Wednesday’s open workout. “Because if he goes to my body, I go to his head. It’s that simple. Let’s see to see which one hurts more.”
Despite Zhang’s warnings, Kabayel, 25-0 (17 KOs), is likely to target the body of the larger, older man but would be ill-advised to hold his feet in front of the heavy handed Chinese fighter for longer than absolutely necessary.
Two-time EBU champion, Kabayel, seems certain to use his footwork and the constant lateral movement that has posed Zhang issues in the past and the 41 year-old veteran will need to maintain faith in the plan his trainer, Shaun George, has been drilling into him during their training camp in New Jersey.
Although Zhang scored two knockdown during his fight with Joseph Parker last March, he weighed in at a career heaviest 2911/2lbs for the fight and the New Zealander’s clever movement and timely punch picking saw him pocket enough rounds to earn a majority decision.
Zhang regathered himself after the disappointing loss to Parker and scored a dominating stoppage victory over Deontay Wilder last June. George knows that Kabayel will be much more likely to follow the blueprint that Parker laid out but Zhang has shown him the desire and determination he wanted to see.
“Zhilei’s been motivated. We want this world title shot and he's in our way so we're going to go right through him,” he said.
“He's always been good. He just had a lapse [against Parker]. It wasn't his best performance but I think that right now, Zhilei is locked in. This is going to be the best performance you'll see out of Zhilei.”
