Yoshiki Takei-Yuttapong Tongdee WBO Bantamweight Title Fight Rescheduled For May 28 In Yokohama, Japan
Yoshiki Takei has a new date and a familiar location for a previously targeted challenger.

The Ring has confirmed that Takei’s WBO bantamweight title defense against Thailand’s Yuttapong Tongdee will now take place on May 28. An exact venue was not specified but the title fight is due to take place in Takei’s hometown of Yokohama, Japan.

Takei (10-0, 8 KOs) and Tongdee (15-0, 9 KOs) were previously due to meet on Dec. 24.

The event as a whole was canceled after the planned Naoya Inoue-Sam Goodman event was pushed back by a month. Takei-Tongdee was supposed to move with the new date, but Takei was forced to withdraw due to a torn labrum.

Now fully healed, The Ring’s No. 4 bantamweight is set for his second WBO title defense.

Takei won the belt in a twelve-round, unanimous decision win over Australia’s Jason Moloney (27-3, 19 KOs), The Ring’s No. 7 bantamweight, last May 3 at the Tokyo Dome. The bout took place on the undercard of Inoue’s sixth-round knockout of Luis Nery (35-2, 29 KOs) in his RING/undisputed junior featherweight championship defense.

The previously scheduled date for his title defense against Tongdee would have marked Takei’s sixth straight pairing with Inoue (29-0, 26 KOs) dating back to Dec. 2022. The injury and healing process, however, leaves him with his own fight date.

Tongdee will enter his first career title fight. He has never previously fought beyond the ten-round distance or outside of his native Thailand.

Takei is part of a Japanese sweep of bantamweight titleholders, all of whom occupy the The Ring’s top four slots at the weight.

Junto Nakatani (29-0, 22 KOs), The Ring’s top-rated bantamweight and No. 9 pound-for-pound fighter, holds the WBC belt. Ryosuke Nishida (10-0, 1 KOs) is No. 2 at 118 and owns the IBF title. One spot below at No. 3 is Seiya Tsutsumi (12-0-2, 8 KOs), the reigning WBA titlist.
