ORLANDO, Florida — A pair of top flyweights will take center stage Saturday.
Yankiel Rivera and
Angelino Cordova meet in a clash of undefeated flyweights for the interim WBA world title in the main event of a Most Valuable Promotions card
streamed live worldwide on DAZN. The winner will be in line to face newly crowned WBA and WBC 112-pound champion
Ricardo Sandoval.
While that possibility is the ultimate goal for both fighters, it's the last thing on Rivera's mind as he heads into the toughest test of his career on Saturday.
Looking ahead but not past the 29-year-old who will stand opposite him in a matter of hours, El Doctorcito made that clear during his final press conference comments.
"I would love that [Sandoval unification] opportunity, but right now I have Cordova on my mind. But yes, knowing that he has both the WBC and WBA [titles], that would be fantastic for me."
Rivera (7-0, 3 KOs), who represented Puerto Rico at the 2020 Olympics, will be making his debut under the MVP banner. Ranked No. 1 by the WBA, the 27-year-old enters this encounter after a fourth-round stoppage of Angel Gonzalez in his home nation.
By contrast, Venezuela's Cordova (19-0-1, 12 KOs) will be looking to earn a second crack at world title honours. In his first championship challenge, he was dropped twice en route to a 12-round majority decision defeat by Julio Cesar Martinez in March 2024. The result was subsequently changed to a no-contest after Martinez failed a post-fight drug test.
The 21-fight veteran has boxed just once since then, during the same December weekend, outpointing Josue Jesus Morales over eight rounds.
"I'm not overconfident at all," Cordova said. "I said it before. This is not about being too confident. This is about me being able to do the work that I need to do. So, I feel very well, very good for this opportunity."
The opportunity goes beyond a chance to win a belt and full world title shot. It provides a platform to represent their respective countries and bring back a title to their people.
"This would be a fantastic thing to be able to bring back another championship for Venezuela," Cordova said. "God knows that my country needs it, tthat kind of motivation."
Rivera echoed the sentiment: "I get the opportunity to not only represent Puerto Rico, but also be able to take a title back to the island. This is great for me."
