Willibaldo Garcia-Rene Calixto: MP Promotions Lone Bidder, Wins Rights To Vacant IBF Title Fight Rematch
The rematch between Willibaldo Garcia and Rene Calixto can now move forward.

The Ring has confirmed that Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions won a purse bid hearing for the promotional rights to the rematch for the vacant IBF junior bantamweight title. MP Promotions submitted a $151,100.10 offer during Tuesday’s session held via video conference.

Garcia and Calixto will each earn $75,550.05 —a 50/50 split as the two highest-ranked challengers for the title. Both an exact date and location are forthcoming, though The Ring has learned that it will take place this April at a venue in Mexico.

The two were ordered to a rematch shortly after their terrific first fight last Dec. 20, which produced everything you’d want in a title fight—except for a winner. Garcia (22-5-2, 13 KOs) and Calixto (23-0-1, 9 KOs) fought to a twelve-round, split decision draw at Twin Messe in Shizuoka, Japan.

Garcia prevailed by 118-110 on judge Tetsuya Iida’s card. Judge Surat Soikrachang (116-112) scored the fight for Calixto, while judge Edward Ligas (114-114) awarded six rounds apiece to produce the stalemate.

A rematch was expected to return to Japan, under Kameda Promotions, who promotes Calixto. Talks seemed free flowing until they unexpectedly hit a wall. It appeared there was still room to reach a deal but a purse bid hearing was instead requested by Calixto’s team.

The move was odd, considering that Kameda Promotions did not participate in Tuesday’s hearing. Instead, it is now Garcia and his team who will control the event details for the rematch.

The IBF 115-pound belt was vacated by Argentina’s Fernando Martinez (17-0, 9 KOs), The Ring’s No. 1 junior bantamweight.

A decision was made by Martinez—who still holds the WBA title–at the time to proceed with a more lucrative rematch with Kazuto Ioka (31-3-1, 16 KOs), The Ring No. 2 contender. However, the status of that fight is open-ended, as Martinez’s name was since attached to other rumored fights, including The Ring/WBC champ Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KOs).
