Canelo Alvarez might be expected to become a two-time undisputed champion when he meets William Scull on May 3, but the Cuban is laser-focussed on causing an upset.
Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) will clash on Cinco De Mayo weekend for the former’s WBA/WBC/WBO/Ring and the latter’s IBF world title when they face off at Riyadh’s ANB Arena.
Scull is an unproven fighter and will have it all to do against his Mexican counterpart, who is a former undisputed champ at 168 pounds already.
Alvarez is attempting to win back the IBF strap he had to relinquish last year, with Scull winning the vacant belt against Vladimir Shishkin on points last October.
Canelo is hoping to set up a mega-bout with Terence Crawford in September, but in order to do so, he needs to regain the last remaining belt at super-middleweight before securing a fight with the former undisputed junior-welterweight and welterweight champion.
Scull, however, is adamant on upsetting the applecart, and promises he will walk away from Saudi with all the marbles.
Scull said at Thursday's press conference in New York: “Look, I’m firm and secure in what I want to do. On May 3 I’m going to display my talents and I will shut everybody up. You’ll see.
“I feel really good right now. I rely on my skills, I’m ready for May 3 and to give the fans a great fight which is what they deserve.
"I’ve fought in different countries already, I’m going to enjoy it, this is going to be great for all of us."
Alvarez hasn't fought since a unanimous decision win over Edgar Berlanga on Mexican Independence Day last year, and will be itching to set up a money-spinning bout with Crawford.
Last month, the Mexican signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season and Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority.
The deal commits him to the Scull fight, a huge bout with Crawford, and two fights in 2025, with one of possibly coming against the winner of Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, which headlines a Ring Magazine card on April 26 in London,
