WBC Reinstate Galal Yafai As Interim World Champion, Order Francisco Rodriguez Rematch After Drug Findings
In a release published earlier Sunday morning, the WBC are taking steps towards scrubbing flyweight contender Francisco Rodriguez's 12-round decision win over Galal Yafai off the record books.

Rodriguez, who broke CompuBox records with his tireless punch output and dropped Yafai in the final round during a bruising spectacle away from home in the Olympic champion's Birmingham base last month, was notified about a positive drug test two weeks later.

VADA notified the sanctioning body on July 8 about the Mexican's post-fight urine A sample yielding an adverse analytical finding for Heptaminol and the following day, Matchroom — who promoted the event in England — announced the same.

Heptaminol, a cardiac stimulant, increases blood flow through the veins and arteries which supply and drain the heart muscle while improving the capacity for efficient output. As such, by stimulating the central nervous and muscle systems, it would reduce fatigue.

A substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency list, it's widely common among endurance sports such as cycling and swimming to boost alertness and can also be used as a masking agent for other drugs or a one-off, improving performance.

Yafai spoke about never being hit quite as hard as Rodriguez did to him. Chihuas' ability to maintain a non-stop pace without visibly tiring throughout made some skeptical about his conditioning and there was a sense of inevitability surrounding the news once it broke.

Nonetheless, the WBC's Clean Boxing Program insisted they would observe due process and have since investigated the circumstances surrounding the 33-year-old's case. Now, they've agreed to a year-long "adjudication agreement" with several consequences to come.

The circumstances around Rodriguez's non-intentional ingestion of a banned substance, as well as using an over-the-counter energy booster that included two prohibited substances on the label, leads them to believe it was accidental and not done for performance-enhancing reasons.

Nonetheless, he'll have to undergo a minimum of three random tests — at his own cost and expense — during his probationary period, while participating in a WBC Nutrition Committee program addressing their concerns about his health and safety and do at least four sessions focused on preventing consumption of banned substances.

More pressingly, his interim title has now been declared vacant and Yafai reinstated as interim world champion, with a direct rematch ordered. In their own records, they'll amend the result to a no-contest and urge the British Boxing Board of Control to do the same.

Should he have another adverse finding or show "reasonable proof" of ingesting another banned substance over the next year, backdated to June 21, they will suspend him indefinitely.

Yafai (9-1, 7 KOs) was said to be in a bad way post-fight and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, told The Ring how uncomfortable the final few rounds were to watch ringside.

Kal, the 32-year-old's older brother and retired former fighter, illuminated just how damaged Yafai had been in the aftermath, telling BoxingScene that he was still complaining of headaches and a perforated eardrum two weeks post-fight. It remains to be seen whether they'd welcome an immediate rematch, knowing how things have unfolded here.
