The WBC will review the outcome of Sam Eggington’s controversial technical decision victory over Lee Cutler, their president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed.
Cutler and Eggington met for the WBC International silver super-welterweight title at the BP Pulse Arena in Birmingham on April 20 as part of the undercard for Ben Whittaker’s victorious rematch over Liam Cameron.
After nine rounds of action, the fight was stopped on the doctor’s advice due to a cut over Eggington’s right eye and, as referee Mark Bates adjudged it to have opened as a result of an accidental head clash, the fight went to the cards rather than ending in a stoppage victory for Cutler. Egginton won on all three cards with scores of 87-85 x2 and 90-83 in his favour.
But now Saulaiman has confirmed that Cutler’s manager Jake McGuigan has appealed to the WBC about the outcome of the fight because they believe the cut in question was caused by a legal punch. The WBC’s president also added that a panel will not review the complaint to decide on their next steps.
He posted on X: “The WBC has received an official appeal from Jake McGuigan with regards to the WBC International title contest in Birmingham which was aired by Sky Sports Boxing.
“Lee Cutler lost his title by technical decision due to Eggington cut and the referee ruling was accidental head but . This video clearly shows this cut by legal punch. Instant replay is not allowed in UK WBC will review all matters through the corresponding panel.”
Beneath his words, Sulaiman included a video showing a right hand landing heavily on Egginton, opening a cut above his left eye.
But in response to Sulaiman’s post, Eggington’s manager and trainer Jon Pegg pointed out that the fight was officially stopped due a cut above Egginton’s opposite eye, which he says was the result of a headbutt.
Pegg wrote: “Just for clarification, Sam had three cuts from the constant butting and as Boxrec clearly shows, the bout was halted due to the cut over the right eye so this gamesmanship is both undermining to the BBBofC and to their officials.”
