WBA Interim 130-Pound Champ Elif Nur Turhan Keen To Return Before 2026
Alycia Baumgardner relinquished her WBC junior lightweight title and the following week, her unified championship defence against Leila Beaudoin was announced on a busy November 14 bill headlined by the Jake Paul-Gervonta Davis exhibition bout in Miami.

Although the 31-year-old (16-1, 7 KOs) has been open about moving up through the weights in future, as former foe Mikaela Mayer continues to do, there's another challenge awaiting the Ohio native if successful next time out.

Turkey's surging contender Elif Nur Turhan (11-0, 7 KOs) has made a name for herself with devastating knockout victories on away soil over the past six months. She was swiftly signed by Eddie Hearn's Matchroom stable after sweeping aside Shauna Browne without breaking a sweat in March and her prospects are promising across two divisions now.

At the time in Belfast, Hearn contextualised an impressive away victory during her post-fight interview.

"She's probably been messaging me nearly every day for the last few years, saying 'give us one chance and took a world title eliminator on 10 days' notice. She's one of the most exciting fighters in women's boxing now, mandatory for Caroline Dubois at 135-pounds - the team had no doubt [she would win] when I saw them backstage."

BOXXER-backed Dubois (11-0-1, 5 KOs) defended her WBC world title two weeks later with a hard-fought points win over Bo Mi Re Shin but while there's renewed optimism she'll return with a 'big fight' promised by promoter Ben Shalom, hasn't been seen since.

Turhan meanwhile, continued her road warrior status with another impressive away performance - this time in Paris, France - seizing another perfect record to stun Rima Ayadi with a sixth-round knockout victory during their junior lightweight contest on August 28.

A big right hand floored the 36-year-old and an unanswered eight-punch flurry was enough to see referee Bruno Dubois step in and wave off their contest, sealing Turhan the WBA's interim world title. As far as her next move is concerned, she awaits news.

Through her translator and team member Cem Hassan, she told The Ring: "We're just in talks with Eddie, there could be something coming up very close - but not confirmed - the plan is to make sure we get it [another fight] before the end of the year."

When asked about her willingness to mirror the men's code by doing 12 x 3-minute rounds, which has been a sticking point for some in recent years, the 30-year-old wasn't fussed.

"For the world's best, 12 threes is normal and that's the way it should be so we can show what we can do - similar to the men - if you're the best in the world, being a woman shouldn't change that. We're training with 15-20 rounds' worth of 3-4 minutes, it shouldn't be hard [to change] since that's what we train for. We want to bring parity and it's something I've thought about for a while."

Confirming an openness to flicker between the two weight divisions, Turhan knows the interim title at 130-pounds provides her more leverage than being Dubois' mandatory challenger would. Matchroom-BOXXER have rarely teamed up to make cross-promotional bouts and after the Beatriz Ferreira unification fallout, it's unlikely to change in this instance.

Ferreira (8-0, 2 KOs) made the third defence of her IBF lightweight crown with a 10-round points win over Maira Moneo on Saturday night back home in Sao Paulo, Brazil while fellow champions Terri Harper (WBO) and Stephanie Han (WBA) await confirmed fight dates.

Turhan has been billed as a cool, calculating customer - akin to Artur Beterbiev - in a way that mystique endears her to fans unlike most contemporaries, especially with an exciting style that often produces highlight reel moments.

When asked about where her knockout power comes from, The Ring's No. 5-rated junior lightweight contender laughs.

"A lot of it is to do with genetics, both my parents were sportspeople and I've always been involved in sports. From the age of three, my dad always pushed me to be active, we had a home gym and trained there, you just work hard, do the best you can and train hard.

"Every time I train, it's as if I'm fighting for a world title - that's what makes me strong - pain strengthens you and that's something I live by, it gives me strength and I believe in that, whoever works hardest will win."

She is sure to reserve praise for her decade-long head trainer, Agmur Ulusal, for finding openings to exploit when gameplanning potential opponents and in-fight strategies, while keeping an open mind on what a potential Baumgardner matchup may look like.

"Agmur has been there with me through trials and tribulations, closer than anyone has been - in and outside the ring - I wouldn't be in a boxing ring without him.

"I know Alycia's a very good boxer, fights really hard and is very technical but she doesn't know me and we won't know one another better until we get into the ring together."

First things first, Baumgardner defends her Ring and unified 130-pound titles against Quebec's Beaudoin (13-1, 2 KOs), hopeful she can mirror compatriot Kim Clavel's recent world title win against a longtime champion needing another rival to bring out her best.

Turhan just needs to keep winning as she has been and before you know it, she could prove the foil to Baumgardner's ambitious plans.
