Vergil Ortiz Jr. Preparing For September Return: 'Jaron Ennis Has To Wait In Line'
Vergil Ortiz Jr. is ready to return to the ring and is targeting a late September date, his father and trainer, Vergil Ortiz Sr., told The Ring.

Just don't expect Ortiz Jr. to save the date for Jaron Ennis, who has plans to move up 154 pounds, and thus, end his welterweight title reign as the The Ring, WBA and IBF champion.

The WBC interim junior middleweight champion Ortiz Jr. and Ennis' camps were deep in negotiations in November for a February 22 matchup that suddenly fell apart. The cause of the collapse was around what weight the clash would take place at. It was assumed the fight would be at 154 pounds, since Ortiz Jr. had not made the welterweight limit since August 2022 after the blood disorder rhabdomyolysis caused him to move up in weight.

Ennis chalked up the ordeal as "miscommunication."

On Thursday, Ennis promoter and Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn alluded that a fight between Ennis and Ortiz was recently discussed for August as Boots' 154-pound debut, but Hearn said Ortiz wasn't ready for an August date.

Ortiz Jr. (23-0, 21 KOs) underwent right-hand surgery after beating former junior middleweight title holder Israil Madrimov in February and didn't start punching again until late May.

"Look, don’t take anything they say seriously," Ortiz Sr. told The Ring after learning about Hearn's comments. "They had a fight with us, and they took it. Then a week later, they said 'no' and then denied they did. I don't believe anything they say. Vergil is already lined up for a fight. This isn't, 'Okay, we will drop everything we're doing and fight you instead, because you're now ready and want to do it on your terms.' They turned down record pay, so they are going to have to wait in line like everyone else does, and like we have ourselves."

Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs) chased his title unification aspirations in April instead of taking on Ortiz Jr. and stopped Eimantas Stanionis in six rounds.

While Ortiz contemplates a clash against IBF junior middleweight champion Bakhram Murtazaliev, he could also be facing an old foe.

The WBC said a bout between Ortiz and Serhii Bohachuk is "pending to be ordered" during the sanctioning body's June status update.

Ortiz and Bohachuk fought to a Fight of the Year contender in August, and Ortiz survived two knockdowns to sneak by with a majority decision win.
