Thomas LaManna spent months watching tape of
Jermall Charlo. There were times when he could barely keep his eyes open during those mundane videos, but it was something he believed he needed to do.
LaManna (39-6-1, 18 KOs) has fought a ton of top-notch fighters, but you could make the argument that Charlo was the best of them, along with Erislandy Lara.
Knowing what he was up against, LaManna watched everything he could on him. He also trained like a madman. But, despite buckets of sweat dripping down his body during those sessions, and regardless of the headaches that followed hours of watching his film, nothing helped.
Charlo, who was out of the ring for nearly two years, didn't appear rusty.
From the beginning, he dominated LaManna. After getting dropped in the third, fourth and fifth rounds, he was stopped in the sixth.
In the blink of an eye, his nine-fight win streak was flushed down the drain. Now, he's attempting to process everything. LaManna has never been viewed as a bonafide contender, but he has enough experience to compete with the best of them. However, after sharing the ring with a few current and former champs, the 33-year-old realizes that he couldn’t prep for Charlo's special attribute.
“Jermall Charlo really got one of the best jabs I ever seen,” LaManna told Tha Boxing Voice. “That jab was elite.”
Whether he fought on the outside or attempted to make it a dirty fight up close, LaManna had no answers. The constant thud emanating from Charlo’s fists knocking across his skull was heard throughout Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
But pointing out Charlo’s jab is easy. Was that the main reason he came up short? Possibly, but from LaManna’s point of view, it wasn't just the former champ's punches that hurt, but more so the mental and overall approach that was practically impossible to figure out.
“His timing, his composure was on another level.”
