Lamont Roach is officially moving past the
Gervonta Davis mess and fighting one of Davis' former opponents.
The 30-year-old from Washington, D.C., will face off against
Isaac Cruz in December, The Ring's Mike Coppinger reported on the new weekly "Inside the Ring" show
A specific date and location have yet to be announced.
Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) will compete at 140 pounds for the first time in his career, making it his third straight contest in a different weight class.
For the better part of the last two months, Roach believed that a rematch with WBA lightweight champion Davis was next. They met the first time on March 1 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center,
the result being a majority draw.
Davis activated his immediate rematch clause. And, of course, Roach was all for it. Then Davis left him at the altar.
"Tank" surprised everyone by agreeing to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in an exhibition in November at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, which left Roach without an opponent.
Following his close decision loss to Davis in December of 2021, Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOs) went on to win four straight, including a world title at 140 pounds.
Ultimately, though, his reign was short-lived as he was outclassed by Jose Valenzuela in August of last year.
Still, Cruz picked himself up yet again, winning two straight and the interim WBC 140-pound title to set up another big fight.
