Tyson Fury has warned The Ring's 2024 Prospect of the Year
Moses Itauma that a fight with Dillian Whyte could end in disaster, just like it did for Jared Anderson when he fought Martin Bakole last year.
Itauma (12-0, 10 KOs) will
headline an Aug. 16 card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, against former world title challenger Whyte on Esports World Cup Fight Week.
Whyte (31-3, 21 KOs), a mainstay world-level contender at heavyweight over the years, is reaching the final stages of his career and, factoring in inactivity at 37, one wonders what he might have left in the sport.
The Body Snatcher is a name in British boxing, however, having headlined numerous pay-per-view events towards the final years of Matchroom Boxing's partnership with Sky. Though he was knocked out in the sixth round, Whyte was also part of a record-breaking world heavyweight championship fight with Fury in April 2022 as the pair fought in front of 94,000 at Wembley Stadium.
While Whyte would be a sizeable scalp for Itauma, who already looks to be anointed as the future king of the heavyweight division, Fury has warned things could go awry like they did for
Anderson against
Bakole in August.
At the time, Anderson was a highly-touted 24-year-old prospect who had yet to fight world-level opposition. And his inexperience showed as a 31-year-old Bakole brutally stopped him in the fifth round of their bout on the undercard of Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles, California.
"Make no mistake, Dillian Whyte is a massive puncher to the head and body," the Gypsy King said at an IBA event in Istanbul, Turkey. "I know he's taking it very seriously. I've been speaking to Ty Mitchell who's in training camp with him and I'm looking forward to the fight.
"It's a big step-up for Moses because he hasn't really fought anyone on Dillian's level, though the old Dillian was a couple of years ago.
"It's gonna be interesting to see how much Whyte has left. Could this be similar to what Martin Bakole did to Jared Anderson? Maybe it's too early, maybe he passes with flying colours. And that's why you've got to watch it and find out."
Fury believes, though, the timing could be perfect for Itauma, who was a sparring partner of the former world heavyweight champion during preparations for the first
Oleksandr Usyk fight.
"It's a good fight for Moses, it's a very good time to fight Dillian, he's had a couple of years out of the ring," he continued.
"One thing I will say about Moses, he's a good fighter, he's a good boxer. He's like a sponge, you tell him something and he absorbs it, he listens. He's only 20 years old. I told him years ago, 'Don't worry about breaking records, you've only got one career, take your time and enjoy it.' Because I remember when I was 19 or 20 and now I'm 36 and it's gone."
Itauma vs. Whyte will be streamed live on DAZN and tops a bill which features
Nick Ball vs. Sam Goodman for the former's WBA featherweight title,
Anthony Cacace vs. Ray Ford and
Filip Hrgovic vs. David Adeleye.
Ring ambassador Hayato Tsutsumi is also in action against Qais Ashfaq.
