NORFOLK, Virginia –
Delante 'Tiger' Johnson didn't exactly entertain a restless crowd Saturday night, but he remained undefeated.
The 2021 U.S. Olympian used his jab and occasionally landed right hands to outbox Janelson Bocachica in an uneventful 10-round welterweight bout on the
Abdullah Mason-Jeremia Nakathila undercard at Scope Arena.
Johnson was wary of Bocachica's power for much of their fight and often failed to fully commit to his punches, but his defensive strategy helped him avoid Bocachica's right hand throughout their bout.
Cleveland's Johnson (15-0, 5 KOs) won a unanimous decision, as judges Mark D'Attilio (100-90), Benoit Roussel (97-93) and Steve Weisfeld (98-92) all scored their fight for him by comfortable margins. Detroit's Bocachica (17-4-1, 11 KOs, 1 NC) is 0-3-1 in his past four fights.
Bocachica clearly needed a knockout to win entering the 10th and final round.
Bocachica showboated toward the end of that round, yet he didn't try to do anything to change the inevitable outcome. A flush left hook by Johnson made Bocachica hold him in a neutral corner barely a minute into the 10th round.
By the ninth round, Bocachica looked tired and stopped pressuring Johnson.
A left hook by Johnson got Bocachica's attention just before the midway mark of the eighth round. That was Johnson's most effective power punch of their bout to that point and indicated he was willing to be more offensive-minded than he had been.
The action finally picked up early in the seventh round, when Bocachica connected with a left hook and Johnson quickly countered with his own left hook. That didn't last long, though, as the pair reverted to what they had done in most of the previous six rounds.
Bocachica became frustrated in the sixth round because Johnson jabbed and didn't engage much.
Bocachica charged at Johnson as soon as the bell sounded to start the sixth round. Johnson tied him up and prevented Bocachica from connecting with a clean punch.
Fans booed during the fifth round because there wasn't much action. Bocachica challenged Johnson to trade more and box less in that round, but Johnson remained disciplined and stuck to his game plan.
Johnson's gloves blocked Bocachica's punches consistently during the fourth round. They were often tied up on the inside in the fourth round as well.
Johnson's defense enabled him to slip several left hooks and right hands by Bocachica during the third round. Johnson's jab was also effective during those three minutes.
Troy Isley outpoints Michel William
In the bout before Johnson's win, undefeated
Troy Isley withstood a competitive tactical challenge from Etoundi Michael William and won their 10-round middleweight bout by unanimous decision.
William's power caused Isley (15-0, 5 KOs) to box from a distance at times, but all three judges favored Isley’s activity. Brian Costello scored eight rounds for Isley, who won 98-92 on his card, whereas Paul Wallace and Dave Braslow had it closer, 96-94 apiece for Isley.
Brazil’s William (16-2, 12 KOs) lost a second straight 10-round unanimous decision after being unanimously outpointed by Mexico's Jose Borrego (22-4, 18 KOs) in his previous fight October 25.
