Top Prospect Steven Navarro Honors Late Grandfather With 4th-Round TKO Of Juan Garcia On Torrez-Vianello Undercard
Steven Navarro honored the memory of his maternal grandfather in fitting fashion for their boxing family Saturday night.

The 21-year-old junior bantamweight prospect stopped Mexican veteran Juan Garcia in the fourth round of their eight-round bout on the Richard Torrez-Guido Vianello undercard at Palms Casino Resort’s Pearl Theater in Las Vegas. The Inglewood, California native’s victory occurred approximately one month after his grandfather, Francisco, died.

Referee Allen Huggins halted the action prematurely, but the fast-handed, strong Navarro (6-0, 5 KOs) had started opening up on the game Garcia in a one-sided fourth round.

Garcia (14-2-2, 11 KOs) never went down and protested the stoppage, which officially came at 2:46 of the fourth round. Mexicali’s Garcia, 27, lost inside the distance for the first time in 18 professional fights.

The intelligent, skilled Garcia got off to a strong start by landing various punches, including a right uppercut, in the first round. Navarro wasn’t as accurate as Garcia in those first three minutes.

The second round was competitive as well, but Navarro became comfortable fighting from mid-range in the third round, switched between southpaw and orthodox stances, landed numerous straight lefts and defended himself well.

Navarro continued to connect in the fourth round, when he opened a cut across the bridge of Garcia’s nose. Garcia looked like he was breaking down, which was why Huggins intervened.

Junior middleweight prospect Art Barrera Jr. defeated Daijohn Gonzalez by second-round technical knockout in the bout before Navarro’s win.

Barrera (8-0, 6 KOs), of Lynwood, California, dropped Gonzalez (12-6, 6 KOs) twice with left hooks during the final minute of the second round. He attacked Gonzalez once the Davenport, Iowa resident reached his feet the second time, which caused referee Thomas Taylor to stop their fight at 2:56 of the second round.

Earlier Saturday, middleweight Jahi Tucker outboxed Troy Williamson, dropped him once, hurt him on several other occasions and won their eight-rounder by unanimous decision.

Tucker (14-1-1, 6 KOs), of Deer Park, New York, won by the same score, 99-89, on the cards of judges Chris Migliore, Ricardo Ocasio and David Sutherland. England’s Williamson (20-4-1, 14 KOs), who was knocked down by a right uppercut during the second round, lost on points in a third straight fight.

In the bout before Tucker’s victory, junior lightweight prospect DJ Zamora dropped Hugo Castaneda three times before their scheduled eight-rounder was stopped in the middle minute of the fourth round.

A right-left combination by Las Vegas’ Zamora (16-0, 11 KOs) sent Mexico’s Castaneda (15-2-1, 11 KOs) to one knee just about midway through the fourth round. Referee Raul Caiz Jr. immediately stopped their fight once Castaneda went down for the third time.

Caiz kept a close eye on Castaneda during the fourth round. He had a ringside physician examine Castaneda before the fourth round began because Zamora knocked him down twice in the third round.

Los Angeles’ Sammy Contreras won the opening bout on this nine-fight card by first-round knockout over Robert Jimenez.

Contreras, 21, made an impressive professional debut by unloading a barrage of power punches on Jimenez, until he took a knee with 47 seconds to go in the opening round. Referee Robert Hoyle had started to move in to stop their four-round bout before Jimenez went down.

Jimenez (2-3-1, 1 KO), of Nampa, Idaho, lost by knockout for the first time as a pro.
