Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) is now a five-division champion, three-division undisputed titleholder and The Ring’s No. 1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
LAS VEGAS — Terence Crawford made his ring walk like a desperado under the song “Cancion Del Mariachi,” carrying a guitar case, and went on to ruthlessly snatch Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez’s titles.
Crawford flawlessly strummed all the right strings to win decisively Saturday at Allegiant Stadium on Mexican Independence Day weekend in front of a record crowd of 70,482.
After scoring the super middleweight jewels, Crawford declared that Alvarez’s title as the global flagbearer of the sport is no longer valid.
“I'm the face of boxing now, and the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world like I’ve always been,” Crawford said during his post-fight remarks.
“This is the top of the top. Canelo is an all-time great. He's the last one. There are no more Canelos. When you look around, you say, 'I'm the Canelo.'”
Crawford relished his role as an underdog and disproved the adage that was often bandied around “that there are weight classes for a reason” as he moved up two divisions to dethrone the 168-pound king.
“I feel great,” said Crawford. “Anybody can be a nobody. A lot of people doubted, said I didn't fight anybody, I can't sell, I don't have a personality. They just wrote me off for years and years, and it all came to a halt.
“I am blessed by God. A lot of people didn't give me credit and believed in me … It's going to be excuses [from others] behind my victories. That's what happens when you are great and so much ahead of the competition. They don't respect you. They think you fight nobodies.
“Shoutout to Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season. They believed in me from Day One to put the money behind me. This wouldn't be possible without them.”
Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) is now a five-division champion, three-division undisputed titleholder and The Ring’s No. 1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
His career is being romanticized like never before, and he’s finally getting his flowers by the boatload.
And rightfully so.
After all, this may very well have been his swan song and last ring walk.
