Terence Crawford dismisses discussion of how he compares to Floyd Mayweather after his victory over Canelo Alvarez on Saturday in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS — Terence Crawford beat Canelo Alvarez in such a convincing fashion Saturday that the Mexican star said he's better than Floyd Mayweather, the generational great who preceded them.
“I think Crawford is way better than Mayweather,” Alvarez said during his post-fight press conference.
When Crawford was asked how his resume compares with the fellow undefeated five-division champion Mayweather, who also beat Alvarez in 2013 by decision, the Nebraska native said such a notion shouldn't even be contemplated.
“Floyd was the greatest of his era. I'm the greatest of my era,” Crawford said. “There is no need to compare me to Floyd, or Floyd to me.”
Mayweather said after the fight that he bet $50,000 on Crawford and took home $124,000.
Crawford, meanwhile, has been betting on himself throughout his entire career with an underdog mentality.
With wins against Alvarez, Errol Spence, Israil Madrimov, Shawn Porter, Amir Khan and Kell Brook over the last six years, the three-division undisputed crownholder has wiped away any dialogue of not being a generational icon after years of yearning for legacy-defining fights.
“It means a lot to me because anybody can be a nobody. They're saying all I fight is nobodies, so what can they say now? Somebody tell me what you can say now?” Crawford said.
“Great things come to those who wait … the cream always rises to the top. All the time that they block me out. They said I wasn't fighting nobody. I can't beat this dude. I can’t beat that dude. Every time that I got a chance, I wipe the floor with him. Wipe the floor with 'em.
"So just imagine where I would've been at today if I had got them opportunities a long time ago. But then again, it wasn't my time. My time is now, and I'm happy that everything played out the way it did. And you're looking at the undisputed champion of the world right now.”
