Teofimo Lopez Jr.’s complicated relationship with Top Rank has reared its ugly head this week, as The Ring and WBO junior welterweight champion blasted his career-long promoter in a series of posts on X for trying to stage a fight against Subriel Matias, going as far as asking for his release from the company.
Lopez was in London on Saturday for The Ring Awards, and he further clarified his position on how he wants to move forward with his career.
“It's a shame that Top Rank has to put me with a guy, one offer, with Subriel Matias, who has no value,” Lopez told Seconds Out on the red carpet.
“Why not get the likes of Jaron Ennis and put a bigger price? Why not unify and fight Richardson Hitchins for the IBF title in New York? Let's make boxing great again.”
The Ring’s Keith Idec reported on Wednesday that Lopez turned down Top Rank’s final offer “way above his contract minimum” before a Tuesday deadline for an ESPN pay per view main event that was targeted for March 15 in Las Vegas.
The former 140-pound titleholder Matias would have certainly been a step-up in competition for Lopez following two lackluster fights in 2024 and unanimous decision wins against Jamaine Ortiz and Steve Claggett.
Matias, long-considered a boogeyman, lost his luster last summer after dropping a unanimous decision to Liam Paro, who has since lost the title to Hitchins.
Lopez also met with Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia, during his trip to the UK and alluded that big fights were around the corner.
Ryan Garcia, who was also in attendance for The Ring Awards, said “it's looking like I’m going to fight Teofimo Lopez” next.
Lopez, co-winner of The Ring’s 2020 Fighter of the Year honors after beating Vasiliy Lomachenco, said his goal is to win the honor again in 2025.
To help get him there, Lopez has linked up with renowned coach Eddy Reynoso in recent months.
