Teofimo Lopez Jr. continues tinkering with how his career will be handled.
The Ring and WBO junior welterweight champion has signed a managerial deal with Keith Connolly, it was announced on Monday.
The development arrives two months after Lopez linked up with esteemed coach Eddy Reynoso and one week after meeting with Turki Alalshikh, owner of The Ring and the head of Riyadh Season, to discuss long-term fight plans.
Connolly is a well-connected power broker who currently handles the careers of Edgar Berlanga, Conor Benn, Richardson Hitchins, Alycia Baumgardner, Filip Hrgovic, Daniel Jacobs, and Sergiy Derevyanchenko, among others, and has a consistent track record of landing his fighters prolific paypays and opportunities.
Connolly shared the development on social media.
“Signed superstar world champion Teofimo Lopez today with Mike Borao, joining the rest of Team Lopez, including head trainer Teofimo Sr. and lawyer Greg Smith,” said Connolly. “Huge fights incoming in 2025.”
Lopez (21-0, 13 KOs) was previously managed by longtime boxing agent David McWater.
Lopez is promoted by Top Rank and has been publicly berating the Bob Arum-led company in recent weeks because he’s unhappy with how his career is being handled. Connolly will be tasked with clearing the air and repairing the relationship or negotiating the release of Lopez from his contract, just like he did for Berlanga two years ago when the super middleweight was tied to Top Rank.
Lopez was supposed to fight Subriel Matias in March but said he
declined the $2.8 million offer that was made by Top Rank.
Perhaps Connolly can concoct a plan to keep Lopez satisfied moving forward.
Connolly is the Boxing Writers Association of America’s 2019 Manager of the Year award winner and appears to the frontrunner to win the award again in 2024 after negotiating a lucrative bout for Berlanga against Canelo Alvarez, guiding Hitchins to a 140-pound world title, landing Hrgovic a handsome purse to fight Daniel Dubois, and signing Benn.
Lopez’s 2024 campaign consisted of lackluster competition and unanimous decision wins against Jamaine Ortiz and Steve Claggett.
