Taylor Bevan Refusing To Get Carried Away By Perfect Start: 'You've Got To Strive For Perfection'
It can be very easy for a promising young fighter to get swept away by the excitement of their new profession.

After spending years grinding away in the same amateur gym, they suddenly find themselves surrounded by new faces and fielding compliments from people they once watched on television.

Since turning professional last November, 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Taylor Bevan has calmly and efficiently racked up five consecutive stoppage victories.

Just a few days after stopping Zdenko Bule in the third round of his latest appearance, the unbeaten super middleweight told The Ring that he is determined not to get caught up in the whirlwind.

"Something I'm trying to do more of is reflect on things as I go because I don't want to get to the end of my career and it's all just flown by," Bevan said as he relaxed in a cafe.

"It's very easy to get caught up in the moment, I think, and even when I have time off like this week, it's easy to just think times are great and then get right back into camp. I think that time for reflection is very important because it helps your career progress and you're not just taking it all for granted.

"I think it's important to embrace and appreciate the moment as it's happening."

So far, Bevan (5-0, 5 KOs) has quietly gone about his work and avoided the type of hyperbole that seems to accompany every successful amateur into the professional ranks nowadays.

The 24-year-old Welshman hasn’t been prematurely anointed as a future multi-weight world champion. There have been no press conference outbursts or manufactured feuds.

There has been no need. Bevan’s boxing has spoken loudly for him.

Authenticity matters to Bevan and whilst he knows he is competing in an era that seems to reward attention-grabbing antics and social media clout more than actual ability, wants his boxing to make the most noise.

"It's finding that balance, isn't it? Because I'm not one for attention seeking but, at the same time, pro boxing is an entertainment business," he said.

"Big characters do tend to get the limelight. Even people that can't box necessarily like these YouTubers are getting all the attention and making all the money because they are big characters but I'd like to think I can make enough of a name for myself in the ring.

"I'm a fan of boxers that are quite understated.

"I like how Dmitry Bivol is. He's just very professional. Even someone like Oleksandr Usyk, he is a big character, but it wouldn't work if he didn't back that sort of character up in the ring.

"His boxing comes first, doesn't it?"

If Bevan continues to progress at his current rate, it will become impossible to avoid the attention.

British boxing is going through a tricky period where the older, established names who helped take the sport to new heights are coming towards the end of their careers and a new group of young fighters aren’t quite ready to fill the void.

Boxing fans love knockouts and excitement and if Bevan continues to lengthen his highlight reel, he can expect to be fast tracked.

Bevan isn't the type to be taken in or distracted by the praise coming his way.

"Even last week [the win against Bule], I wasn't happy with it," he said.

"Everyone's so complimentary about things. Myself, I'm always looking for perfection and that never comes.

"I think sometimes it can come across as a bit of a negative attitude but that's just the way I am. You've got to strive for it and come as close as you can, but I'm never happy with it."

It is often said that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. In between doing everything he can to find perfection, Bevan is allowing himself to enjoy the process of becoming a professional fighter and appreciate the platform he has been given.

"I am really enjoying it," he said. "It's a bit different to the amateurs where you've got to just stay on it all year round and it gives me a bit more structure to my training. I've got a proper training camp.

"I think I've been very lucky with how things are going. I've signed with Matchroom, so I've got that great structure and a team of people promoting me.

"I'd say it is what I expected, but obviously life as a pro is different for everyone, depending on if you're boxing on small shows or if lucky enough to be boxing on huge shows like I am. I can't thank Matchroom and the team enough for what they've done for me so far."
