NEW YORK — If you took a look at the resume of
Dalton Smith, you’d have a hard time recognizing many of the names on there.
Though he's a promising fighter, he's still a slight underdog heading into his
January 10 bout against Subriel Matias at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The pair will do battle for Matias' WBC junior welterweight title.
Is Eddie Hearn, Smith’s promoter, surprised? Not at all. But does he agree with it? Not in the slightest. He believes
Matias (23-2, 22 KOs), who has dished out his fair share of beatdowns throughout his 25-fight career, will find himself on the wrong end of one himself.
“It’s a great fight, and Subriel is a tremendous fighter, but it's just the perfect style for Dalton Smith," Hearn told several reporters during their New York presser. "He’s a master boxer, great footwork, and he punches very hard. I think he’ll stop Subriel Matias late in the fight.”
In three of his last four appearances, Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) has managed to find a stoppage. Matias, though, doesn’t believe he’ll have a difficult time defending his 140-pound crown against the Englishman.
Matias failed to stop his last opponent in Alberto Puello, who arguably won the fight himself. Matias was resolute and it was he who had his hand raised in victory on July 12 on "The Ring III" in Queens, New York.
Hearn, for now, views Matias as an enemy for the time being, but he can’t hide his affinity for the Puerto Rican. According to the Matchroom chief, however, the two-time champ is simply up against it on January 10.
“Matias has a huge heart, but this is a great style for Dalton Smith,” Hearn continued. “But it’s not going to be easy.”
