Stephen Fulton Believes He Should Have Stopped Brandon Figueroa
If you ask most observers who had no ties to Stephen Fulton, they’ll tell you he looked spectacular.

Last month, the former unified champ at 122 pounds became a two-division belt holder. His victim, Brandon Figueroa, had no answers, losing a wide unanimous decision.

On the night, everything was clicking. Jabs, right hands, hooks to the body, inside work, all of it was eye-catching. But while his praises have been sung by just about everyone, the only one who isn’t patting him on the back, is Fulton himself.

“Like a B-,” said Fulton to YSM Sports Media when asked to grade his performance.

Looking back, there were certain dead spots for Fulton where he could have been busier. As he continues to look at the mistakes that were made, he’s convinced that if he upped his activity just a tad bit more, his points win could have turned into a highlight-reel-worthy KO.

“I could’ve put my combinations together a little bit more and then stopped him.”

Before getting himself back on track, Fulton (23-1, 8 KOs) was left for dead following his lopsided defeat to Naoya Inoue. The critics chastised him to no end and admittedly, it annoyed him initially. However, the Philly star eventually became phlegmatic.

He saw the lips of his detractors move but thanks to him covering his ears, there was no sound coming out. To a certain extent, Fulton has noticed that things have simmered down. His naysayers will always have something to say but he isn’t sweating it.

Not only has he developed thick skin to deal with it all but Fulton has come to the realization that no matter how much his detractors talk, his biggest critic will always be the man in the mirror.

“I answered some but I could’ve answered more," continued Fulton. "That’s just me criticizing myself. I’m my biggest critic.”
