Shakur Stevenson's next opponent is now en route, while his previously scheduled challenger is now out of the hospital.
Upstart contender Josh Padley is now set to challenge for Stevenson's WBC lightweight title. The unbeaten Brit has passed the check weight required by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) and is on his way to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The two will meet this Saturday as part of Riyadh Season's loaded show on DAZN Pay-Per-View and PPV.com from ANB Arena.
"Shakur Stevenson is set to face Josh Padley in a fight that’s going to shake the ring," Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority and head of Riyadh Season, announced Wednesday. "Don’t miss The Last Crescendo."
Stevenson-Padley is part of a seven-fight PPV event topped by the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol RING and undisputed light heavyweight championship rematch.
Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs), The Ring's No. 3 lightweight, will attempt the second defense of his WBC lightweight title. Padley (15-0, 4 KOs) enters his first career title fight, which comes against one of the sport's very best and on very short notice.
As first reported by The Ring, the need for a new opponent arose when Floyd Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) fell ill and was hospitalized on Tuesday. The development left the BBBofC to disqualify the Austin, Texas-based lightweight from competition this weekend.
Schofield was since released from the hospital, per Golden Boy Promotions, who represents the unbeaten lightweight.
"[Tuesday], Floyd "Kid Austin" Schofield Jr. fell ill and was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure," Golden Boy said in a press statement. "In the interest of Schofield’s health and safety, the British Boxing Board of Control made the decision to cancel his scheduled bout against Shakur Stevenson.
"Schofield has since been discharged from the hospital and is awaiting the results of his medical evaluation. We extend our gratitude to His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, SELA, and the medical professionals who provided Schofield with care."
Padley was one of two names offered as a potential replacement, but was the logical choice from a challenger standpoint. The 29-year-old Doncaster native is ranked number twelve by the WBC, which made it easier for the BBBofC to ultimately approve him for Saturday.
The bout comes five months after Padley registered the biggest win of his career in a ten-round decision over Mark Chamberlain.
Their battle of unbeaten Brits took place last Sept. 21 in Riyadh Season's UK launch show at Wembley Stadium in London, England. Chamberlain was a favorite fighter of Alalshikh's, but Padley ruined any immediate plans for his countryman and is now set for—by far—the biggest opportunity of his career.
