Dismissing practically everyone’s intellect about the sport stems from several situations, many too long to go fully into detail over. But there’s one particular incident that seemingly gets under his skin more than anything.
Last month, Gervonta Davis went toe to toe with Lamont Roach. Their fight would end in a majority decision draw but prior to them getting it on, few, if any, believed things would go that way. Well, besides Stevenson.
Roach, who moved up five pounds, was mostly considered the inferior fighter and given no chance to make it competitive. Stevenson though, placed an imaginary hand on Roach’s shoulder and told him to go out there and prove people wrong. So, when the current WBA 130-pound titlist did just that, Stevenson nodded in approval.
Now, weeks later, Stevenson is still being grilled over his previous prediction. Looking at Roach from the outside is one thing but Stevenson, admittedly, knew what it was like to get in there with him and see what he had, making his prediction an easy one.
“I sparred with Lamont,” said Stevenson to FightHub TV. “I knew that he was a good fighter. He helped me get ready for the Oscar Valdez fight and I knew that his style, with Tank style, what he would be able to bring to the table.”
Stevenson, after watching them go at, felt as though Roach should have gotten the official win. He’ll seemingly have a chance to knock Davis off his high horse a second time as a rematch is ostensibly imminent.
During their first showdown, Stevenson never formally picked Roach. He merely stated that he wouldn’t be surprised if he won. Now, if they do run things back, his prediction is much more definitive.
“I like Lamont in the rematch.”
