Shakur Stevenson almost couldn't believe his eyes.
The Ring’s No. 3 ranked lightweight watched closely as Devin Haney’s skull continued to bounce off the canvas. Ryan Garcia’s left hook was the culprit on the night, resulting in an upset win this past April. Ultimately, that win was overturned and ruled a no-contest due to a failed post-fight drug test on Garcia’s behalf but the damage was already done.
Normally flashy and always in the public eye, Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) has been both out of sight and out of mind. Slowly, however, Haney has begun to show face. He was recently spotted in London working out publicly. He also made an appearance at The Ring Awards this past weekend.
The eventual hope of Haney is to get his hands on Garcia in a rematch later this year. But before the pair have their conclaves to discuss things, Haney plans on pursuing a comeback fight with March being floated around as a possible date.
Stevenson and Haney aren’t the best of friends but when the former undisputed champ does make his return, Stevenson’s eyes will be glued to the television screen.
“I’m interested,” said Stevenson to Fight Hub TV when asked if he was excited about Haney's return. “I wanna see how he handles that traumatic experience that he went through and see how he bounces back from it.”
Whether he was underneath the bright lights or going to war in sparring sessions, Haney has never taken a beating. Garcia though, took his pound of flesh from him.
Garcia and Haney will run things back at some point Stevenson believes. The former Olympic silver medalist won’t be apathetic towards their sequel but in terms of how their possible rematch will play out, it all depends.
Haney’s greatness is something Stevenson won’t deny. He’s also aware that Haney walks around as a technically undefeated fighter since his Garcia defeat was scrubbed. However, it doesn’t matter their first matchup was erased. Haney took enough damage, from Stevenson’s point of view, to possibly change him forever.
“I know he’s strong mentally so he can win for sure but it all depends on how he’s feeling after he gets back. Is he the same fighter? Let’s see. We gotta find out.”
