Serhii Bohachuk’s Promoter Contends Vergil Ortiz ‘Is Smart To Stay Away'
Serhii Bohachuk has resigned himself to never being able to avenge the second of his two professional defeats.

The Ukrainian junior middleweight contender would love to fight Vergil Ortiz again. Neither Bohachuk nor his promoter expects that marketable rematch to take place, though.

“That’s definitely the sense that I get,” Tom Loeffler, whose 360 Promotions represents Bohachuk, told The Ring. “If they really wanted the rematch, we very easily could’ve done it. Serhii gave Vergil the opportunity. He was the [WBC] interim world champion and he gave Vergil Ortiz the opportunity.”

Ortiz overcame two flash knockdowns — one in the first round and another in the eighth — to beat Bohachuk by majority decision a year ago in Las Vegas.

Judge Max De Luca scored it 113-113. David Sutherland and Steve Weisfeld scored Ortiz a 114-112 winner.

Loeffler and Bohachuk believe he won, but there was no debate about their 12-round, 154-pound bout being one of the most entertaining, all-action fights of 2024.

“If they were confident they won the fight,” Loeffler said, “or were gonna win a rematch they would’ve definitely given him a rematch. But it’s OK. You can’t blame him for understanding how dangerous Bohachuk is in the ring.”

It took Bohachuk four years to secure a rematch with Brandon Adams, who knocked him out in the eighth round of their March 2021 bout in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Bohachuk (26-2, 24 KOs) and Adams (25-4, 16 KOs), of Whittier, California, will meet again September 13 in a 10-round rematch on the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford undercard at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs), of Grand Prairie, Texas, is preparing to defend his WBC interim super welterweight title against Erickson Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) on November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Lubin, a southpaw from Orlando, Florida, is a credible contender who has beaten previously undefeated opponents Jesus Ramos (23-1, 19 KOs) and Ardreal Holmes (17-1, 6 KOs) in back-to-back bouts.

Bohachuk is ranked second by the WBC, eight spots ahead of the 10th-rated Lubin. Jaron Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs, 1 NC) strangely supplanted Bohachuk as the No. 1 contender despite the former Ring/IBF/WBA welterweight champ making his 154-pound debut against Angola’s Uisma Lima (14-1, 10 KOs) on October 11 at Wells Fargo Center in his hometown Philadelphia.

Loeffler has petitioned the WBC’s ratings appeals committee because Bohachuk beat England’s Ishmael Davis (13-2, 6 KOs) in a WBC elimination match December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Bohachuk became the mandatory challenger at 154 by defeating Davis, yet he still hasn’t received a shot at Ortiz’s interim title or WBC champ Sebastian Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs).

Ennis' upcoming bout also is a WBA eliminator, which would typically eliminate him from contention for a WBC belt.

“I think it shows where Ortiz is,” Loeffler said of him choosing Lubin as his opponent instead. “If he was that confident that he beat Serhii, he would’ve easily given him the rematch. It was a candidate for Fight of the Year, so definitely the fans wanted to see it.

"Turki Alalshikh came up to us after the fight and told us that he thought Serhii won the fight. And that’s why Serhii was on the Riyadh show in Saudi Arabia at the end of last year. It’s just one of those things where not getting the rematch is not gonna derail Serhii’s career, because there are so many other big names in the division. I think Vergil Ortiz is smart to stay away from Serhii Bohachuk, having been dropped twice, the only times he’s been dropped in his career. But again, if he can beat Brandon Adams, there are other names for Serhii in what’s probably the deepest division in boxing.”
