Sebastian Fundora sat on the sidelines and waited … and waited … and waited following a thrilling bloodbath against Tim Tszyu last March.
Fundora collected the WBC and WBO junior middleweight titles in the split decision win and immediately became one of the hottest names in a division.
But the big fights never came to be.
“The Towering Inferno” was supposed to face Errol Spence Jr., but that matchup got moved around more than a U-Haul truck until PBC pulled the plug on the pitting altogether.
The WBO stepped in and ordered a fight between Fundora and WBA 154-pound title holder Terence Crawford in August but “Bud” balked at the thought of the bout as he continued to chase a clash against Canelo Alvarez.
A deal with the IBF belt holder Bakhram Murtazaliev, the only other champion in the division, never developed.
That left the unified champion Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) with no choice but to take a fight against Chordale Booker (23-1, 11 KOs), which headlines a PBC Championship Boxing on Prime Video card on March 22 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
“Things change all the time. Opponents fall through. Events fall through. With Booker, we’ve been training hard to have our first defense of our titles,” Fundora said during a recent press virtual press conference.
“I was ready to fight Spence last year but they kept switching the dates. I don't know what happened with Spence. I can't speak on his behalf. But we were ready to fight and the dates kept changing for whatever reason. I was training since May for whatever was to come. It didn't happen, but here we are now. I am ready.”
Fundura resurrected his career courtesy of the win against Tszyu.
In Fundora’s previous fight before facing the Australian on less than two weeks notice, the 6-foot, 6-inch southpaw was crushed with a shocking upset knockout loss against Brian Mendoza in April 2023.
Booker has scored six consecutive wins since suffering a first-round stoppage loss against Austin “Ammo” Williams in 2022.
“I have to do what I always do – win and put on a great performance [against Booker] and do my job like always,” said Fundora, ranked No. 5 by The Ring at 154 pounds.
“Those are big fights [against Spence and Crawford] and those doors are always open. I’d love to fight either of them. This division is very stacked. We have lots of talent and you'll see it March 22 with my fight. I’m excited for whoever I have to fight next as well.”
