Sam Eggington Refuses To Give Lee Cutler Rematch Despite WBC Order: 'They Can F—k Right Off'
Sam Eggington says he will NOT give Lee Cutler a rematch after the WBC ordered the pair to fight again following the controversial ending to their clash last month in Birmingham.

Both men fought each other on the undercard of Ben Whittaker-Liam Cameron II on Easter Sunday at the BP Pulse Live Arena and the bout ended in a unanimous technical decision win for Eggington (36-9, 20 KOs), whose multiple eye cuts led to a stoppage of the contest after nine rounds.

Referee Mark Bates judged the wound over Eggington's right eye to have been caused by a clash of heads and the judges scored things 87-85, 87-85, 90-83 in favour of the hometown man.

According to a video which was released by Team Cutler, it was a punch which opened up a cut above Eggington's left eye. Cutler's manager Jake McGuigan put this information forward to the WBC, whose president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed a panel would review the complaint before ultimately ordering a rematch.

Jon Pegg, Eggington's trainer and manager, responded to Sulaiman on X by pointing out the contest was officially stopped due to the cut above his man's right eye, not his left.

And despite the WBC's order, Eggington is adamant the majority of the damage he sustained in his fight with Cutler (15-2, 7 KOs) was due to head clashes and the sanctioning body's decision was not made because they disagreed with the referee's call.

"It was a headbutt," the 31-year-old told The Ring. "Every one of them were headbutts.

"I mean, they might have opened one with a punch but the headbutts were all night, starting from the second round. The first one burst open in the second round and that was from a headbutt.

"It don't matter how it opened, one might have opened with a punch but everything was caused or worsened by headbutts. It was all night, it was constant. So there's no real argument there.

"The WBC have ordered a rematch but they've also said everything that the ref and the doctor did was perfectly legal and all above board. The WBC and the boxing board have both agreed that...so yeah, they've ordered a rematch because of the way it ended, but not because the referee or the doctor was wrong.

"I just feel like that should be put out there because everyone's saying 'oh, there's a rematch ordered'. That makes it look like I got away with it. Well, that's not the case."

Eggington, who is eyeing up a shot at the winner of Sam Gilley and Louis Greene's British junior-middleweight title fight on June 7, adds he won't be giving Cutler a rematch based on principle alone.

"I won't box Cutler again," he says. "I saw Cutler as well after the fight. I saw him in the ring and I said, listen, it is what it is, bro. I've given him a lot of credit in all my interviews. And I saw him at the hotel as well and I said to him 'they're going to ask us to do that again'. And he said 'yeah'. I said 'well, next time we'll get more money'. I was giggling, I was having a little laugh and I was down for it.

"People know me, I don't mind a hard fight or a rematch or anything like that, I enjoy my job. But the way they've gone about it saying 'oh, Sam's asked the doctor to get out of there and John Pegg's been on to the people at Boxrec' and that sort of petty b——t nonsense. They can f—k right off, pal. Just because of that, I will not rematch Cutler and I'll stand on that."

Eggington, who has won numerous titles throughout his 45-fight career, is happy to vacate the WBC Silver title belt as a result of his stubbornness.

He adds: "I'll vacate. I won that when I was 20, many moons ago, mate. I didn't box Cutler for the belt because really there was nothing there for me.

"He wasn't going to boost me up the rankings or anything. It was just a fight to get back on TV, a payday and to get back on the scene again and that's exactly what I've done.

"He couldn't really punch and that's the truth. Never once did I feel like he was going to stop me. He was waiting for the last two rounds as if he was going to put it on me. If that was his plan, it was a stupid plan."
