Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero, Haney-Ramirez, Bakole-Ajagba Set For Ring Magazine May Card
Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney have their marching orders for this spring.

Turki Alalshikh, the new owner of The Ring and head of Riyadh Season, revealed the lineup for a springtime tripleheader in New York City’s Times Square. Garcia and Haney will appear in separate bouts, designed to set up their anticipated rematch later this year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The full lineup was revealed by The Ring on Monday evening as part of Alalshikh’s first Ring Magazine USA show.

Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs; 1 No-Contest) will face former WBA junior welterweight titleholder Rolando Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) in a bout above the junior welterweight limit. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs; 1 NC)—the former Ring/undisputed lightweight champion and WBC 140-pound titlist, will face former unified WBC/WBO junior welterweight titlist Jose Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs).

Also included on the show, Martin Bakole (21-1, 16 KOs) and Efe Ajagba (20-1, 14 KOs) will meet in an IBF heavyweight title eliminator. The timing of the announcement comes just as the bout was scheduled for a Jan. 30 purse bid hearing as previously reported by The Ring.

“This card will be named after the upcoming new game Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves as a collaboration between SNK and Ring Magazine,” the announcement confirmed.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is due to release on April 25, on the eve of the first collaboration between SNK and The Ring. The game’s name is attached to the already announced Chris Eubank Jr.-Conor Benn grudge match on April 26 in London.

Garcia and Haney have not fought since their controversial meeting last April 20 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Their twelve-round fight ended with Garcia claiming a majority decision, only for the verdict to be overturned weeks later when it was learned he tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine.

The fallout included a one-year-suspension, a fine and forfeiture of Garcia’s entire purse—a reported $1,200,000. Garcia will still have to be cleared by the New York State Athletic Commission, who will oversee the forthcoming May event.

Haney retained his WBC 140-pound title despite in the in-ring result, because Garcia was more than three pounds over the limit during their official pre-fight weigh-in. The belt is no longer in his possession, as he opted to relinquish in lieu of a modest payday for a mandatory title defense against Spain’s Sandor Martin (42-3, 15 KOs).

Haney’s bout against Ramirez will come at the full welterweight limit, as will Garcia-Haney II assuming both fighters win in May. The unbeaten Las Vegas-based boxer previously confirmed that he is done with the junior welterweight division.

Garcia previously teased a clash with another former WBA 140-pound titlist in Mexico City’s Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz (26-3-1, 18 KOs). The matchup was never verified, nor did it make sense given Cruz is due to face countryman Angel Fierro (23-2-2, 18 KOs) on a Feb. 1 PBC on Prime Pay-Per-View event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The opponent instead is the man whom Cruz knocked out to win the title he briefly held last year.

Las Vegas’ Romero rebounded from a knockout loss to Cruz with a ten-round, unanimous decision over Manuel Jaimes (16-2-1, 9 KOs) last Sept. 14. Both fights took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. His lone other defeat came in a May 2022 sixth-round knockout to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (30-0, 28 KOs), The Ring’s No. 1 lightweight, at Barclays Center.

Further up the scale, Bakole and Ajagba will battle for the right to challenge for the IBF heavyweight title. Daniel Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs), The Ring’s No. 2 heavyweight contender, currently holds the belt and is due to defend against Joseph Parker (35-3, 24 KOs), No. 4 at heavyweight and a former WBO titlist, on the Feb. 22 Riyadh Season card at Kingdom Arena.

Bakole has won ten in a row—all but two inside the distance—since an Oct. 2018 stoppage defeat to Michael Hunter. The 33-year-old Congolese heavyweight has bumped off a trio of unbeaten during that run, including Jared Anderson on the Aug. 3 Riyadh Season USA launch at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

Ajagba is on a five-fight winning streak. His lone career defeat came in Oct. 2021, when he dropped a twelve-round, unanimous decision to Frank Sanchez in Las Vegas.

The IBF will need to be formally notified that a deal was reached to cancel its purse bid hearing, though that line of communication is expected in the coming days.
