Ryan Garcia Will Undergo Hand Surgery, Can Resume Training In 6 Weeks

As first reported by SI.com’s Chris Mannix, Garcia will undergo surgery Tuesday in the Los Angeles area. The surgical procedure will address damages sustained to his right hand.

Ostensibly, Garcia will be in good hands. Dr. Steven Shin will handle his operation and has worked on plenty of high-profile clients in the past, including former multi-divisional champ Vasiliy Lomachenko and current pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez.

Once he’s ushered out of the operating room, Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) will need at least six weeks of recovery before he’s able to resume training.

Garcia, 26, reportedly injured himself during training camp for his May 2 showdown against Romero. The California native seemingly knew something was off and decided to have multiple cortisone shots as opposed to calling their bout off. His insistence on powering through, however, did him no favors.

Garcia fought listlessly on the night and was unable to truly let his hands go. Fighting defensively allowed Romero to take full control, leading to Garcia hitting the deck in the second round before he was eventually outpointed.

For Garcia, Romero was supposed to be his coming-out party. He sat sequestered on the sidelines for more than a year following his pre-fight failed drug test. Those subsequent tests led to his victory over Devin Haney being changed to a no-contest.

Garcia’s 2024 wasn’t kind, but 2025 was on track to be a vengeful one. If he'd pushed Romero out of the way, a rematch with Haney was already set in stone. Haney will be the furthest thing from his mind as he jumps on the road to recovery.

In the interim, Haney will have to find a new plan. He successfully made his return against Jose Ramirez on The Ring’s May 2, card, winning a dull decision. Although Garcia didn’t grab the win, Team Haney still pushed for an immediate rematch.

Those plans are off the table. At least until Garcia gets his body right.
