LOS ANGELES — Ryan Garcia's reunion with Eddy Reynoso will have to come later.
Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) headlines a card presented by The Ring at New York’s Times Square against Rolando Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) on May 2 for the WBA welterweight "world" title.
In recent weeks, Garcia reunited with former trainer Eddy Reynoso,
leading many to believe they’d be working together once more. Garcia and Reynoso enjoyed a successful five-fight run together from 2018 to 2021 – all via stoppage wins.
But Reynoso has a commitment with career-long charge Canelo Alvarez on May 3 in Saudi Arabia, as the super middleweight king prepares to face William Skull for the undisputed title.
The logistical conundrum has forced Garcia to reevaluate his corner.
Garcia told The Ring in an interview on Monday that he’ll be trained by his father and longtime head coach Henry Garcia, his brother Sean Garcia, as well as Manny Pacquiao's longtime strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune for the Romero fight. Garcia added Fortune to the team in recent days.
Garcia was previously trained by Derrick James over his last two fights, a knockout win against Oscar Duarte in 2023 and a controversial clash against Devin Haney that was ruled a No Contest after Garcia tested positive for the PED ostarine. Garcia was suspended a year and sued by Haney for battery, fraud, and breach of contract following a fight that was originally ruled a majority decision win for Garcia due to a three knockdown performance.
During a press conference at The Mayan, Teofimo Lopez Jr. — who has also linked up with Reynoso — said that Garcia isn't training with the former trainer of the year because he didn't want to move camp from San Diego to the Northern California wilderness area of Truckee near Lake Tahoe.
"How can I take you talking the whole camp? So I had to dip," Garcia quipped. No. [It was] circumstances."
