Ryan Garcia Pulls Out From Rukiya Anpo Exhibition Due To Wrist Injury
Ryan Garcia’s return to the ring has hit yet another snag.

The suspended star’s scheduled exhibition against kickboxer Rukiya Anpo on December 30 in Japan has been postponed due to a wrist injury Garcia sustained in training, it was announced on Sunday.

“I’ve been eagerly preparing for my upcoming exhibition fight in Japan, training hard in Dallas over the past several weeks,” said Garcia. “Unfortunately, I sustained a hand injury during training and returned to Los Angeles to be seen by the doctor, who has advised me to postpone my December 30 exhibition.

“This is only a temporary setback, and I sincerely apologize to my fans, Fanmio, Rizin and Anpo for the delay. No one is more disappointed than I am. Thank you for being so supportive.”

The exhibition will be rescheduled for early 2025, according to event organizers.

The bout has been up in the air ever since the kickoff press conference officially announcing the event on November 26. Hours after Garcia and Anpo put on a promotional show for the cameras in Beverly Hills, California, Golden Boy, Garcia’s promoter, released a statement declaring the event could not happen without their permission.

The statement read: “Golden Boy Promotions has exclusive rights to Ryan Garcia’s fights. The organizers of this event [Garcia vs Anpo] have acknowledged as such and have agreed in writing that our sign-off is needed for this event to occur. As no such sign-off has been given, as of today there is no event with Ryan Garcia.”

On December 2, another press conference was held in Japan, indicating the show was moving on. On December 12, Golden Boy president Eric Gomez said they were still working on details and that the event was still up in the air.

Dr. Steven Shin of Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics met with Garcia for a medical evaluation on December 12 and ruled the injury an "aggravated bilateral wrist pain."

“I recommend that he hold off on sparring and boxing matches for several weeks," said Dr. Shin. "Treatment options will be discussed with Mr. Garcia after further evaluation.”

The 26-year-old Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) is pursuing an exhibition only because he’s currently serving a one-year suspension until April 2025 from professional boxing due to testing positive for the performance enhancing drug ostarine while fighting Devin Haney. Garcia had the best night of his career against Haney, knocking him down three times to score a majority decision win. But the result was later switched to a no contest following the PED violation, and Haney has even sued Garcia seeking damages for battery and fraud.

In the meantime, Garcia’s injury has irritated another rival in Anpo.

“I am disappointed to say the least,” said Anpo. “But knocking out an injured opponent won’t mean anything, so I wish him a speedy recovery and hope I can face the 100% version of Ryan Garcia. Get well soon and I’ll let you kiss my fist any time.”
