Lamont Roach made a strong impression by fighting
Gervonta Davis to a draw in March, becoming the first to mar "Tanks's" record.
One observer isn't convinced of Roach's ability, however:
Ryan Garcia, who was stopped by Davis in April 2023.
Roach and Isaac Cruz have agreed to terms on a fight for Cruz's WBC "interim" junior welterweight title this winter,
as first reported by The Ring's Mike Coppinger on “Inside The Ring.
A specific date and location have yet to be announced but the fight is a "done deal," Coppinger reported. December is being targeted.
“It’s a good matchup,” Garcia said on "Inside The Ring."
“I think Isaac Cruz can beat Lamont Roach. I think Lamont Roach had the perfect style for Gervonta Davis, but I just don’t think Lamont Roach is that good of a fighter.”
Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) expected to fight Davis a second time but his rival opted to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in what
promises to be a lucrative exhibition instead.
So Roach turned to Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOs), the former 140-pound champion who took Davis the distance in a competitive fight in 2021. Roach would be fighting as a full-fledged 140-pounder for the first time, which could be a disadvantage.
Garcia believes the Washington, D.C., native would have problems with most of the top junior welterweights.
“If you put him in there with any of these other guys, I don't think he’s gonna have that good of a performance,” Garcia said. “I don’t think so.”
