NEW YORK – Ryan Garcia had a lot less trouble making weight Thursday morning than the last time he fought.

Garcia stepped on the New York State Athletic Commission scale at a career-high 146.8 pounds for his 12-round welterweight fight against Rolando “Rolly” Romero on Friday night in Times Square. Romero came in at 146.6 pounds, also the highest weight of his career.

A ceremonial weigh-in for The Ring’s “FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves” show is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at Manhattan Center. That event is free to the public.

Garcia, 26, will fight for the first time since his infamous fight with rival Devin Haney last April 20 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Haney was set to defend his WBC super lightweight title against Garcia, but Garcia was a whopping 3.2 pounds overweight for their 12-round, 140-pound championship match.

Garcia reportedly paid a $1.5 million penalty to Haney, whose team did not force Garcia to come back to the scale at a lower weight. The contracted weight for the bout between Garcia, of Victorville, California, and Romero, of North Las Vegas, Nevada, match is 147 pounds, the welterweight maximum.

Romero, 29, hadn’t weighed in at more than 140¾ pounds for a professional bout before Thursday morning. Garcia’s previous high was the 143¼ he weighed the day before he fought Haney.

Haney, who will fight Jose Ramirez in the co-feature Friday night, will also box for the first time since Garcia knocked him down three times and beat him by majority decision in their DAZN Pay-Per-View main event.

The result of Garcia-Haney was changed to a no-contest because Garcia tested positive for Ostarine, a substance banned by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association. The NYSAC also suspended Garcia for a year and fined him $1.2 million.
