The images of
Errol Spence in the ring are starting to fade from everyone’s memory.
The former unified welterweight champion has been out of sight since a one-sided stoppage loss to
Terence Crawford in July 2023. He did, however, show up ringside during
Vergil Ortiz’s second-round KO win over Erickson Lubin in Fort Worth, Texas, on November 8.
And Ortiz and his team have mentioned Spence as a possible future opponent instead of Jaron Ennis.
Spence will be in need of a trainer if he does fight again, however, since splitting with Derrick James.
Roy Jones Jr. flew to Dallas to work with him. After doing so, Jones believes the 35-year-old isn’t a shell of his former self.
“He looked good, he looked very good to me,” Jones said to FightHype.com. “I seen that glow in him again. It made me feel good.”
Over the last few years, Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) has flirted with making a return at 154 pounds. Even now, despite being out of the limelight, he has options.
Ortiz called Spence his "dream fight." Sebastian Fundora and Jermell Charlo also have named Spence as a possible opponent.
If he does return, Jones wants Spence to know that he enjoyed their brief time together and is more than willing to continue aiding him for as long as he needs it.
“I loved working with Errol,” he said. “Errol is always fun to work with.”
