Rolly Romero Wants More: 'Every Champion At 147 Is In The Mix'
NEW YORK — Rolando “Rolly” Romero didn’t appreciate how much he was being overlooked.

The 29-year-old was viewed as an insignificant steppingstone as Ryan Garcia fought his way to a rematch with Devin Haney. Romero, however, tuned out the noise and threw his blinders on. In doing so, he secured the biggest win of his career.

The heart of New York City was picked as the scene of the crime Friday night. And, unfortunately for Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), his fans stood frozen in silence when Romero dropped him in the second. From there, things never quite got better, leading to another defeat.

Romero is now the happiest man around, but before he could do a single victory lap the dreaded “what’s next?" question was thrown in his face.

Technically, Romero is in a position of power. His showdown against Garcia was sanctioned as a title bout, making him the WBA “Regular” champion. Now, there are plenty of different routes he can take. And while he didn’t get specific, he did mention a slew of fighters who are immediately on his radar.

“Every champion at 147 is in the mix,” Romero told The Ring immediately afterwards. “There’s Brian Norman, there’s [Jaron Ennis] who has two belts. I’m pretty sure [Mario} Barrios has a fight lined up already so we shall see.”

Before Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) went on to win, the WBA issued a tournament of sorts. Whoever won between Romero and Garcia would be mandated to face the winner of a future showdown between “Boots” Ennis, their super champion, and Shakhram Giyasov, his mandatory challenger.

There are a lot of moving parts, but Romero will be patient before making his decision. He has an appetite for more gold and wants any of the three current beltholders.

As for who he views as his biggest threat, Romero wouldn’t give anyone the satisfaction of calling their name.

“All three of them are tough fights,” he said. “Every single one of them.”
