Eduardo ‘Rocky’ Hernandez will continue his climb towards another title shot.
The Ring No. 10 junior lightweight contender takes on countryman Rene Tellez Giron atop a Feb. 28 DAZN show from Auditorio Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, Mexico. The bout was formally announced on Saturday by Matchroom Boxing, along with five other cards and more to come in a busy first quarter of the new year.
Mexico City's Hernandez (36-2, 32 KOs) has grown accustomed to headlining Matchroom's DAZN shows in his home country. The former title challenge has regularly worked with the global promotional outlet since 2022, and officially signed with them prior to his first career title challenge.
Hernandez was ahead on two of the three cards versus O'Shaquie Foster in their vacant WBC 130-pound title fight last Oct. 28 in Cancun. The bottom fell out in the twelfth and final round, when Hernandez was floored twice and stopped with just 22 seconds to go.
Foster has since emerged as The Ring No. 1 contender.
Two wins have followed for Hernandez, including a messy technical decision victory over Thomas Mattice (22-4-1, 17 KOs) on Sept. 13 in Hermosillo, Mexico. Hernandez suffered a cut over his left eye from a ruled clash of heads.
Tellez (20-4, 13 KOs) saw his three-fight win streak end in his most recent fight.
It came in a spirited effort vs. Floyd Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs), who won a unanimous decision on Nov. 2 in Las Vegas. Tellez was credited with an eleventh round knockdown but lost by scores of 118-109, 118-109 and 116-111 on the official scorecards.
The 25-year-old from Queretaro is generally regarded as a gatekeeper in the 130-135 pound range. He's also suffered defeats to then-unbeaten prospects Michel Rivera and Giovanni Cabrera but also owns a knockout win over 2016 U.S. Olympian Karlos Balderas, who was undefeated at the time of their Dec. 2019 meeting.
