Robert Garcia Doubts Edgar Berlanga Will Become World Champion
There’s a certain section of the boxing population that believes Edgar Berlanga is just about done at the elite level.

Lopsided losses to Canelo Alvarez and Hamzah Sheeraz have damaged his reputation, but the Puerto Rican native isn't giving up on himself. Neither is Robert Garcia ... sort of.

Berlanga is likely confident in his ability to become a world champion and to continue making lucrative paydays. Garcia doesn't believe he'll grab a world title. But making a few bucks? Sure.

“There’s still a few fights out there he could do, might not win, but he could still do and make a lot of money,” Garcia told Fight Hub TV. “He’s probably never gonna be champion, but he made more money than a lot of champions. I gotta give him respect.”

Berlanga (23-2, 18 KOs) hasn't stepped up along with his competition. That continued on July 12 against Sheeraz. During the lea -up to Ring III, at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing, New York, the super middleweight contender promised to knock Sheeraz’s head into the crowd. When the fourth round came rolling by, he was the one looking up from the canvas, leading to a fifth-round stoppage loss.

Although Berlanga did manage to stop Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in the first round on March 15, earlier this year, things haven’t worked out the way he’s wanted.

If Berlanga’s endgame is to become champion eventually, Garcia believes that goal needs to be buried. However, when it comes to marketing, being must-see television and someone who can continue to make millions of dollars, Berlanga has found his lane.

"They did a great job with him,” Garcia said. “His first 16 fights all ended in the first round, that built up his name. Berlanga has never been the most talented fighter out there, but his power and his mouth got him to fight Canelo and make a lot of money. His last fight against Sheeraz, made him a lot of money.”
