The boxing event on the island of Alcatraz, the world’s most infamous prison, is being planned for March 2026 in the San Francisco Bay, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh told The Ring on Sunday.
This development comes on the heels of Tuesday’s news conference in New York to promote The Ring’s inaugural boxing event, one that will take place outdoors in the center of Times Square.
That event features Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero, Devin Haney vs. Jose Ramirez and Teofimo Lopez defending his Ring Magazine junior welterweight championship vs. Arnold Barboza.
Alalshikh will deliver The Ring’s second event July 12, he said, also in New York in an iconic location to be determined. The fights for that event haven’t been finalized yet.
The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, known as The Rock, is now a museum. And it was the setting of the 1996 classic action film The Rock starring Sean Connery as well as the 1979 classic Escape from Alcatraz starring Clint Eastwood.
But it was once home to America’s most-dangerous criminals. And if any prisoner tried to escape, he was forced to travel a treacherous 2-mile swim to the mainland.
The prison opened in 1934 when 137 criminals arrived at their new home. During 29 years of operation, 36 prisoners attempted to escape and none were successful. Twenty-three were captured, six were shot and killed, two drowned and five others were listed as “missing and presumed drowned.”
The prison was in operation from 1934 to 1963. In 1973, Alcatraz was reopened as a national park and museum. And in March 2026, Alcatraz will be transformed into a venue for world-class boxing presented by The Ring and Alalshikh.
