Two of the future faces of female boxing will be fighting on separate cards in Southern California on Saturday night.
In Oceanside, The Ring's 2024 Female Fighter of the Year and undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora will continue to build on her star status as she defends her titles against Marilyn Badillo Amaya, headlining a Golden Boy Show on DAZN.
In Commerce, Iyana “Right Hook Roxy” Verduzco, one of the sport’s rising stars, will be featured on a 360 Promotions show on UFC Fight Pass headlined by Sadriddin Akhmedov vs. Elias Espadas when she takes on Jessica Radtke Maltez in a six-round featherweight fight.
Fundora (15-0, 7 KOs) and Verduzco (3-0, 1 KO) are both 23 years old, but they are at different stages of their careers. Fundora is already rated as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, while Verduzco is looking to prove her promise after a decorated amateur career that resulted in 21 national amateur titles and a 101-6 record.
After signing a multi-year contract with 360 Promotions in October, the Los Angeles-born and bred fourth-generation fighter Verduzco is looking to get on the fast track under the guidance of promoter Tom Loeffler, who’s handled the careers of Cecilia Braekhus, Laila Ali, and Lucia Rijker.
“[Fundora and I are] definitely going to be the next faces of women's boxing,” Verduzco told The Ring in an interview. “I grew up with Gabriela in the amateurs, and she's such a humble and sweet girl. From a distance, I am cheering her on. We’re already making a lot of noise at our age. We're young. We're fast. We're strong. We have years ahead of us. We're the new generation. Whether they like it or not, we're coming.”
Claressa Shields, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano, Alycia Baumgarner, Lauren Price, Mikaela Mayer, and Caroline Dubois are on the shortlist for being the current flag bearers for women’s boxing.
Verduzco, who’s trained by her mother Gloria Alvarado at the Wild Card Boxing gym in Hollywood, is confident in herself when it comes to competing against the current champions.
“I'm progressing well and I want to be active,” said Verduzco, who made her pro debut nearly 16 months ago. “I'm fighting consecutively, and with Tom, I'll be able to be moved right. He cares for me. He knows what I want, and what my team wants, and I only see myself getting bigger and bigger from here. I plan to stay with Tom as long as we are doing right for each other. We trust each other. He's one of the OGs. He's a no-drama promoter, and that's what I love.”
Verduzco says she already has her eyes on 122-pound champion Ellie Scotney, 126-pound champion Serrano, and 130-pound champion Baumgardner, all of whom are signed to Jake Paul’s MVP Promotions.
Loeffler is confident he can build Verduzco to get a crack at those crowns.
“Roxy has superstar written all over her,” Loeffler told The Ring in an interview. “She has that ‘it’ factor. She's a dynamic personality and is charismatic, and she can really fight. We have very high hopes for her. She can be easily positioned over the next couple of years to be in some high-profile fights and be the next generation of superstars. I think Roxy can be on a fast track to becoming a world champion, but we're certainly not going to rush her.”
Loeffler added that Verduzco has already proven to have massive appeal on social media and has been a box office success. But more importantly, both Loeffler and Verduzco agree that the decorated amateur's skills are translating well to the pro ranks.
“I feel that I can be championship-ready by next year,” said Verduzco. “I'll be right there as soon as I get my rankings up and get my opportunity. I'll be ready to take it. I'm already well known. It's only up from here, and being respectful and humble with humility. That takes you a long way. As long as I keep doing what I am doing, I'll be up there along with them.”
