Richardson Hitchins Open To Future Matchup With Jaron Ennis
Jaron Ennis may have a future opponent lined up.

Richardson Hitchins grabbed a seat ringside as he watched Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs) dismantle, embarrass, and walk through Eimantas Stanionis. Before slicing through the Lithuanian’s defense, there were questions surrounding the top of the division. Now, however, the Philly star is viewed as the man to beat.

Hitchins, similarly, views himself in the same light. By and large, the New York native is as competitive as they come. He looks around the 140-pound landscape and notices that there are plenty of big-name matchups he could pursue. But, the sport of boxing has a problem at times. Unifying any division takes time and patience, something Hitchins lacks. Even though he’s proud to have the IBF’s title under his arm, he dreams of becoming a two-division champion.

In order to do that, Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) will have to throw his title to the side and move up in weight. It’s something that the 27-year-old is willing to do. But, if Hitchins heads on over to the welterweight division, he knows that he’ll have to come across Ennis at some point.

It’s a difficult style matchup for Hitchins or anyone for that matter. But confidence is an aroma he’s drenched in. So, when asked if he would be willing to face Ennis in the near future, Hitchins made it clear that he’s all for it.

“It don’t matter,” said Hitchins to The Ring during a recent interview. “I feel like I’m one of the best fighters in the sport of boxing. Whenever the day comes for me to face those guys, we’ll take the challenge.”

At times, words can be taken out of context, so Hitchins wants to make things clear. He isn’t necessarily calling Ennis out, but he wants him to know he isn’t scared of him.

Back in their amateur days, Hitchins and Ennis got it on. And while it was competitive, Ennis came out on top. In the pros, Hitchins doesn’t believe things will be the same. For now though, he doesn’t want to focus on his amateur rival.

There’s plenty of meat on the junior welterweight bone, but if none of his fellow champions want to fight him, he’ll pick up his things and head out the door.

“I do make 140 but I want to unify," continued Hitchins. "If I can’t, then I’m out of there.”
