It Won't Be Long Before Reito Tsutsumi Reaches World Level
Reito Tsutsumi looked the part of a rising prospect at Ring III on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Japanese southpaw dropped an overmatched Michael Ruiz three times to earn a second-round stoppage in the opening bout of the card at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York. The stoppagewas Tsutsumi’s first as a pro.

Tsutsumi (2-0, 1 KO) set the tone early, going after Ruiz from the opening bell, putting the late replacement opponent on his back foot and showing an advanced attack as he battered him to the head and body. Just before the final 30 seconds of the opening stanza, Tsutsumi finally broke through, dropping Ruiz (2-8-1) twice with uppercuts to the midsection before he was saved by the bell.

Tsutsumi put his foot on the gas again to begin the second round and landed a looping left hand to drop Ruiz for a third and final time. Referee Eric Dali started the count before halting the bout 27 seconds into the second round.

In Tsutsumi’s pro debut, he won a unanimous decision in a six-round bout against Levale Whittington (1-3-1, 1 KO) on May 2 at Times Square.

Tsutsumi is the younger brother of Hayato Tsutsumi, who is ranked No. 3 by the WBA and No. 10 by the IBF at junior lightweight. Hayato (7-0, 4 KOs) returns to the ring on Aug. 16 when he faces Qais Ashfaq in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the undercard of Moses Itauma vs Dillian Whyte.

How Reito’s career is handled remains to be seen. If The Ring Ambassador wants to be fast-tracked like his older brother, he’ll need to stay busy and step up his competition with each fight.

Regardless, Reito handled business like he was supposed to Saturday, and if he can continue to do that against stiffer opposition, it may not be too long before he’s in the same echelon as his older brother.
