Ray Ford Dominates Thomas Mattice, Wins Ennis-Stanionis Co-Feature Easily On Points
ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – Ray Ford’s second showing in the 130-pound division was much more impressive than his debut five months earlier.

The sharp southpaw picked apart Thomas Mattice and easily won their 10-round bout by unanimous decision Saturday night on the Jaron Ennis-Eimantas Stanionis undercard at Boardwalk Hall. The Camden, New Jersey native consistently punched in combination and used his hand speed and movement to befuddle Mattice in a co-feature DAZN streamed.

All three judges – Lynne Carter, John McKaie and John Signorile – scored it a shutout for Ford, 100-90.

Ford (17-1-1, 8 KOs) told DAZN’s Chris Mannix during his post-fight interview that he was disappointed he didn’t knock out the 34-year-old Mattice, whom Ford credited for his toughness. Cleveland’s Mattice (22-5-1, 17 KOs) has not lost by knockout or technical knockout in 28 professional fights.

Ford, 26, won his second fight in the junior lightweight division since he lost his WBA featherweight title to unbeaten Brit Nick Ball by split decision June 1 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He unanimously outpointed Puerto Rico’s Orlando Gonzalez in their 10-rounder on the Ennis-Karen Chukhadzhian undercard November 9 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Most rounds of Ford-Mattice mirrored each other, with Ford dominating the action.

Ford opened up on a reticent Mattice in the final minute of the eighth round. By then it became clear Mattice was content to go 10 rounds in a fight he couldn’t win on the cards.

Ford comfortably won the final two rounds and cruised to a wide win on the scorecards.

Mattice snuck in a right hand that made Ford hold him temporarily with just under a minute on the clock in the seventh round. That was a rare moment of success for Mattice to that point in their fight.

Ford’s right hook rocked Mattice and made him move away with about 1:15 to go in a sixth round Ford completely controlled. A faster, stronger Ford picked apart Mattice to his head and body throughout the fourth and fifth rounds, when Ford fought off both his front and back feet.

Ford’s right hook caused Mattice to hold him again halfway through the third round. A straight left by Ford a minute later got Mattice’s attention, too.

A hard left by Ford backed Mattice into the ropes again just after the midway mark of the second round. Ford’s hand speed and power continued to trouble Mattice throughout the second round.

A left-right-left combination by Ford knocked Mattice into the ropes and made him hold 40 seconds into the first round. Mattice smiled at Ford in acknowledgement of his crisp combination. Mattice is taller and has boxed in the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions, but Ford’s power seemed to surprise him in the opening round.
