Preview: Callum Simpson vs. Steed Woodall, Caroline Dubois Begins Full WBC Title Reign
Callum Simpson will look to continue marching up the super-middleweight rankings when making his first title defence against Steed Woodall this weekend.

The 28-year-old (#9 WBA, #14 IBF) won the British and Commonwealth titles in his last outing, outboxing defending champion Zak Chelli on points last August.

That fight came outdoors at Oakwell, the home of Barnsley Football Club, but Saturday’s outing takes place across Yorkshire at the Park Community Arena in Sheffield at the top of this seven-fight Boxxer show.

He is an overwhelming favourite against 30-year-old Woodall, 19-2-1 (12 KOs), but is facing a motivated man who pulled off a huge upset in his last fight.

In June last year, Woodall stopped the previously undefeated Lerrone Richards inside six rounds to ultimately earn him this main event shot at 168lb gold.

In his previous fight, the Birmingham man had lost on points to Padraig McCrory over 10 rounds but bounced back in style against Richards. The only other defeat on his record came against former world title challenger Steve Rolls back in 2015.

But in Simpson (15-0, 10 KOs) he faces an opponent on a roll himself, with five wins in the last two years and the backing of Boxxer and Sky, who clearly consider him as a future star. At 28, if he can continue to rack up victories, he will be well placed for a world title shot as and when the belts fragment in the post-Canelo era.

For now, however, it appears that the aim is for Simpson to win the British title outright, which requires three successful defences, starting with Woodall. Should he come through unscathed on Saturday, The Ring understands Simpson could be set for a second outing at Oakwell in the summer after shifting 7,000 tickets for the Chelli fight, which represented a sell-out.

There is also world title action on the card, as Caroline Dubois boxes for the first time since being elevated to full WBC lightweight champion at December’s convention in Hamburg.

The WBC's decision means for the first time in British boxing history, a brother and sister duo both hold world championship titles with her elder sibling Daniel currently the IBF heavyweight champion.

His 23-year-old sister starts her reign here against Montreal’s Jessica Camara (14-4, 3 KOs) and, like Simpson, is a huge favourite. But Camara, who is ranked No.1 with the WBA, is in good form having won twice in 2024, including a career-best victory last April with a split decision win over two-weight world champion Hyun Mi Choi.
