Plant-Resendiz, Charlo-LaManna on May 31; Plan For Fall Fight if Both Win
Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo are on a collision course for a long-awaited showdown this fall, but first they’ll co-headline a May 31 card in Las Vegas in separate fights, sources told The Ring.

Plant, the former super middleweight champion, will fight Jose Armando Resendiz in the 12-round main event, a PBC on Prime Video event available to subscribers. In the co-feature, Charlo will meet Thomas LaManna.

If both Plant and Charlo win as expected - they both figured to be heavy betting favorites - and emerge uninjured, the plan calls for them to fight each other at 168 pounds later this year, sources said.

There’s bad blood between Plant and Charlo stemming from an July 2023 backstage incident at the Terence Crawford-Errol Spence weigh-in. After Charlo apparently insulted Plant and yanked on his beard, Plant responded with a slap to the face.

Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) has fought only once since that incident, an entertaining ninth-round TKO of Trevor McCumby in September. Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) has also competed only once, a 10-round unanimous decision over Jose Benavidez Jr. in November 2023.

Charlo, 34, will end an 18-month layoff with his return bout vs. LaManna. Charlo is a former middleweight champion who will now campaign at super middleweight. His twin brother, Jermell Charlo, is the former undisputed champion at 154 pounds.

Plant’s two losses came against the sport’s elite: Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez. Plant is The Ring’s No. 4 boxer at 168 pounds.

He’ll meet Resendiz in his second bout since the March 2023 decision defeat to Benavidez. Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) burst on the scene that same month with a 10th-round KO of former champion Jarrett Hurt in an upset.

In his next fight, the Mexican was stopped in Round 8 by Elijah Garcia. Resendiz, 26, has fought only once since that September 2023 loss, a fifth-round TKO victory over a novice fighter named Fernando Paliza in February.

LaManna (39-5-1, 18 KOs) has won nine fights against limited opposition since a first-round KO loss to Erislandy Lara in his lone title challenge. “Cornflake” LaManna, 33, is from New Jersey.

The event is slated to take place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
